Newcomer / Intro How do I consistently untarget by current target?

Ever since I switched to gimbals, I need to untarget ships if they deploy chaff so that my gimbals then behave the same as fixed weapons. I press T to do that. However, if there's another ship (or any targetable object, really) in my field of view, then "T" targets it.

Is there a way to actually untarget in a consistent manner so that I can switch my gimbals between fixed and auto-targeting mode, without nearby objects messing it up?

Doesn't appear so at the moment so you just have to wait it out for the few seconds that chaff works against you.
Good point on untargetting, though. Never thought about that before now and caused me to lose a few targets in low hull.
