How do I delete paths - without...

Without a would-be new length of path wiggling around off my mouse pointer confusing me while I am doing it, and without leaving isolated little round blobs. I thought this was going to be improved before release and that we'd have a bulldozer tool or similar.

Press ESC to back out of paths and that stops the would-be path piece from being active at your mouse pointer.

It makes perfect sense that when the path tool is active, your mouse pointer will have a path piece active. I don't see the point of your concern.

After pressing escape, the path mode exits and I can no longer delete paths. I would expect there to be a path attached to my pointer when I wish to place a path, not when I wish to delete them. I feel that there needs to be an actual "delete path" path variety as one of the choices - maybe represented by a red bar icon as is typical of games that offer specific item type removal within the tool for adding items of that type

Someone on facebook told me that one but it doesn't work for me. Unless you mean the Delete on the numpad - I don't have a numpad, just a Del key

No, you just need to cursor over the path while holding delete and it automatically deletes. But you have to have path building tool selected first.
