Look for pristine metallic rings.

I just went through the same process. I went through 130 limpets with the prospector to find the asteroids with it. Finally got the 10 that I needed for the Engineer. I went to a pristine metallic ring as mentioned by other posters. Just be patient and plan on going through a lot of prospector limpets.
Finding painite is a pain.
The 10 I found for the engineer I was in Delkar - Delkar7A and it took me about 45 minutes along with over 100 limpets to locate 10.

They don't have to be pristine. I mined the 10t for Selene in a major metallic ring. It took me a few hours but I was able to do it 1 jump from home rather than 100+ ly away.
They do have to be metallic though. It didn't used to be this way. First painite I ever mined was in a major metal-rich ring, but that was 1.3. Now you won't find painite anywhere except metallic.
But everything is available even in depleted rings. I've mined depleted ice rings and seen diamonds.
I'm struggling to find any painite. I'm at HR 6421, pristine metallic, and so far not found any at all, and I've nearly completed my 500 tons for Selene Jean.

i use 38 Lyncis, planet before the earth like, inner most ring - inner inner inner!
there are plenty of catalogs on the net of Pristine Rings so you can easily pick one that is close to you
depending on how much of a rush you are in, changing instance can help a lot. some instances have heaps of Painite, some not so much
a 5A prospector limpit allows you to fire and track 3 drones to test the contents of roids, pull up in a group and fire away. shouldnt take too long to find 10t
if your seeing platinum and palladium your in the right spot

No, it's metallic. I used to mine here a lot before 2.2, and found Painite on most of my mining runs. I came back here to do my Selene grind as I know there's Painite. Plus it's only a minute or two from the station to the rings so no need to spend ages in SC.
I guess it's just the game trolling me, maybe better luck tonight
