Newcomer / Intro How do I find ships, modules etc. to purchase

Hi,

Where do I find information on where to buy ships etc. and the prices? I've just started playing, but one of my short term goals is to get an ASP as I like exploration but also because I believe its a good all rounder. So I was looking around but I can't see any way of finding out where to buy one or what the price is. The station I'm in only has a choice of about 5 ships. Is this a limitation of the starting station? I know from videos I watched, that not all stations have everything in them, but I expected there to be some method to find what systems do have the item I'm looking for and its price. I looked in the galaxy map and all through the station services. I'm I missing something obvious?

As far as I know the only in game way to do that is to travel about and see what's on offer as far as I know.

There are some 3rd party websites that have all that info INARA.cz for example, but bear in mind that data can be out of date, especially with modules.
While I advocate using the in game stuff as much as you can, I think it's reasonable that there would be galactic networks that advertise shipyards and outfitters and their stock, so a sneaky look at a 3rd Party Website is ok, especially as they are linked to game data anyway.

Hi Tech and High Population are good indicators that the station will have good ships and equipment.
Inara and EDDB will both allow you to search for specific things, but as mentioned above, things change so prepare to be disappointed if the data is out of date

I would go as far as saying the game expects you to use external information. It's a game where a lot of unexplained stuff is left to the wikis.

I personally recommend using coriolis.io to see what the different ships are like and how they compare with each other. You can experiment with outfitting them there too.

Thank you. These tips and suggestions are helpful and I've bookmarked the sites.

It seems ridiculous that this information is not available in game, even if it was limited to within a certain number of jumps or distance, that would help. I'm only a day in an it seems this game goes out of its way to obscure information. I got a fine for letting off a shot near (not at) a station. It says something about having limited access and that I should pay it at a security office, but it doesn't tell me where the nearest one is.

And on a side note, is there no way to use the mouse with the side panels? This is the future, surely touch screen is a thing. I can use the mouse on some screens and not others... why? It makes no sense

Part of the deal with Elite is that general investigation and discovery you need to do in the first phase to work out where things are and how things work.
It is understandable given the separation of systems that information may not flow between them quite as quickly or readily as you might expect.

Best thing to do is get curious and open and read as much as you can.
To pay a fine you need to talk to the "Authority Contact" in the Starport Services.
Yes it's the future BUT, given the mouse is a primary flight control I suspect there are problems if you made it so you can use it to select things in the cockpit.
It only works in areas you access when you are not in flight.

It seems ridiculous that this information is not available in game, ...........

Think yourself lucky, the hunt-the-module mini-game was a real pain before the 3rd party sites came along. ( ... insert Four Yorkshiremen Sketch here ... )

I see no issues with using the internet to find information - or do you envisage that in the future there will be no intercommunication with other people? I don't mind that there isn't a galaxy-interweb-thingie available in-game - they have enough trouble coding the game as it is, introducing further complications is just asking for trouble. ;)

Thing is in the far future the speed of communications between systems will be the same as the speed of the ships, so having to do the rounds is in context to that extent.

I am sorry but that is complete tosh. They destroyed that piece of non-lore by making your market info in Commodities Market up-to date - add to that the Catrographics data now being updated across the whole galaxy and oh, gosh look - there is a broadcast communications system back on line called Galnet.

Easily sorted by couriered data being transmitted locally
