How do I get a bounty for attacking someone wanted ???

Just a few minutes ago: found three Sidewinders in a USS, all three wanted, first two ran like hell, I started shooting at the third...got a bounty for attacking? WHAT?? And in the end, I was awarded the bounty for killing him, too!

The best part was the Federal ship that started "pretending" to shoot at me, without hitting me at all even though I just stopped in the middle of space wondering what the hell was happening :D

(no, I did not hit the federal ship, the message clearly stated I got the bounty for attacking the Sidewinder)

Did you allow the scan to complete before you attacked? If your normal scanner hasn't finished the scan before you open fire the game knows you had no way of knowing yet if the guy was wanted before you attacked him. That will get you a bounty.

Also, each system is ran by a controlling faction and even the Federal ships belong to that faction. Even attacking a wanted ship within that faction will turn the Fed fighters in the area against you, but only during that particular fight. They are like corrupt cops protecting their own. :)

Um. This is a possibility, but for sure it already appeared as red/hostile in the display (all three of them instantly went 'hostile' as soon as I attacked the first). Shouldn't a hostile be 'just shoot on sight'?

"Red" means "hostile faction" (Either temporarily, if you attacked someone from that faction, or more long-term, if you have an Unfriendly/Hostile reputation with them); it doesn't mean "wanted". So, no, never shoot a red guy on sight!

It's actually lesk risky to attack a wanted Green guy (Wanted ally) than to attack a Clean red guy (Clean ennemy/unfriendly). Although even attacking a Wanted guy (Ally or not) may still lead the cops to attack you (Although you won't get a bounty for that, unless you fight the cop).

So, yeah... There are a few simple rules to retain, and everything can get reaaaaaally messy reaaaaally quick (And sometimes it's just painfully absurd), but that's the expected behavior (At least for now...)

Only rule to retain: Always ensure a guy is wanted before shooting.
