How do I get back into Elite?

ALL games are just a made up grind.

I disagree. I can think of one game in particular - I won't name it, because when I've done that in the past it's been used as a stick to beat me with - that is far simpler and smaller in scope than ED, but which creates incredibly complex and emergent games. Nothing is gated behind the manual repetition of the same loop for X time units. You need thousands of hours of experience with it before you start repeating any particular style of play.

That game isn't even unique, it's just a better representation of the type than most. For example, why did the Minecraft modding scene take off? Because people got bored of punching individual trees and mining individual chunks of ore and building the same cottage out of planks by hand. They wanted to scale up, explore logistical challenges, make choices between expansion and environmental collapse, muck about with urban planning, and so forth. Elite doesn't even have the depth of a half-decent Minecraft mod, if you want to talk about grind.

OP, do you intend to play in Open? If you do, prepare to be killed. PVP is the order of the day and lots of ships are well engineered to kill you in moments. Nothing wrong with that, but be aware.

Alternatively, play in a friendly group or in solo until you refind your feet.

Actually it's bugged, at least it is for me. I have 3 traders I use (one of each type), all one jump away from my home base but sometimes they don't show up when using the service filter, sometimes they do show up....seems to be random and broken.

As to your point...I've never been able to fathom why FDev think it's acceptable to provide almost zero detail on the mechanics of their own game and instead rely on community initiatives like inara or EDDB to fill in for their lack of clarity and transparency.

Introduce new feature....now hide it for obscure game reasons...great.

Edit: Sorry OP...seemed to have hijacked your thread....welcome back :)

Not bugged, they just wont show up if youve not entered that system before, hence why places that have them dont show them.

Not bad advice, but do exactly the first option and go and get killed a few times, hell even look for rebuys once you can afford it. Stay in open.

The skill and knowledge you can accumilate in open is very much more conducive to your long term enjoyment of the game. Dont become one of those folks whos terrified of open and demonises anyone who does PvP.

Even the best pilots lose ships daily and if they claim they don't, they either don't PvP as much as they claim, or they are just straight up lying. Don't let it frustrate you, let it teach you instead.

So I've been out of the game for a while I originally played Elite Dangerous for six or so months when it first came out, not played for years, but I would like to get back in to it.

I did get Horizons but never really played it or got into it.

So the question I have is should I purchase the latest season pass and if so what is it called and where do I get it from?

Thanks.

Welcome back - just play the game using the information the game gives you for a bit before running off on the Google or YouTube trains.

Seriously.

If you want the best overall experience, then I would recommend playing in Open, meeting and engaging with people in Open, making friends in Open, and only coming back to these forums with specific questions.

Enjoy the game - a lot has changed, and a lot has been added since you stopped playing.

Pro-tip: use inara/EDDB once and then edit your bookmarks so you know where stuff such as material traders are at on the galmap.

Drunk_Octupus: go with what Indigo said and you'll be fine.

Engineering is a mahusive pain in the harris- it sucks donkey spheres and if you want to be even part way survivable against vanilla NPCs it's de rigueur. None of it is even close to intuitive, so if you get stuck, ask for advice. We're all in the same boat. Lots of peeps like the effects, but farming the mats/unlocking the engineers/finding mat traders etc can all be a wee bit much when all you want is a shield that doesn't pop when an NPC looks at you sideways, or want a weapon that'll take out a Sidewinder before the next ice age arrives...

Open vs PG/Solo is an old debate. Nothing much has changed, go where griefers like to play and you'll get griefed, keep well away from anything interesting or any place where players congregate and the Galaxy is so big you'll hardly ever see another player.

Mining and exploring have had massive updates recently. Blowing up asteroids for cash is fun and very lucrative at the moment. If you want lots of credits for shipbuilding trying your hand at mining might be a good idea.

Visuals have had an overhaul. The Galaxy might be the wrong shape now :p but it's prettier than it's been in a while.

Welcome home, Commander!

Do some asteroid mining. It's the best new addition in years.

Be prepared to watch a lot of videos and do a lot of googling. Nothing is intuitive or explained in-game.

Once you scrape off the salt here, you double click the launcher, wait on the updates and play. There is no current season pass to buy.

The game has changed a fair bit, so take your time and refamiliarize yourself, then ask specific questions and we’ll be better able to assist.

This is all the advice needed for a start. New mechanics need new keybinds and getting used to, as always, but once that's done it's done.
