That is a good way of short circuiting the wait period. All your bounties immediately become dormant then. Costly though as even Sideys are not free.

Mine always vanish after I get blown up. Is this not how it's supposed to work?

They don't actually vanish. They become 'dormant' which means that if you get another infraction in the same system then it will become live again. Best to take the opportunity if you are there to pay them off.

I think we are confusing fines with bounties. You can pay fines off, not bounties. You have to die to remove a bounty.

Not at all. Active bounties you can't pay off but fines and dormant bounties you can.

I'll agree with you. I forgot about dormant bounties.

Buy a sidewinder, leave station, get scanned by authority ship, let them destroy you, rebuy screen - wanted gone
Get back in old ship and carry on! Works for massive wanted bounties too!

I've done this recently and got rid of my wanted tag. I first tried in a shieldless sidey, but the authorities wouldn't scan me. I followed them around for about 10 minutes. There was a CMDR watching all of this and I guess I could have asked him to scan and kill me. My bounty was less then 10k at the time though.

I returned to the dock to buy shields. I barely made it out of the toaster slot before the authorities destroyed me. The bounty was converted to a fine and I paid it off. Easy-peesy.

I think that you have to be killed by the faction that you killed in order for the suicidewinder thingy to work... Or so i fiound and thats the advice i was given in a previous thread...

Recap: if you're not feeling suicidal, hop someplace quiet, let the bounty time out (it's a few minutes for a stray shot), then hop back into the issuing system and pay the fine (a couple hundred credits or so). That clears your record.

Last time it happened to me, I smuggled myself into the local station to wait out the timer, but I still had to jump out and back again to pay the fine.

I believe you're mostly right there. My bounty was from killing civilians and security forces in a particular system and I was scanned and killed by the controlling faction that took the bounty out on me. In the past, I tried to get rid of bounties in other systems, but they reset to 7 day dormant bounties.

So you have to be scanned and killed by the issuing authority as far as I know.
