Newcomer / Intro How do I get to a particular system?

I`ve taken up a couple of delivery jobs. I find the system on the map, and I know I don`t have enough fuel to get there in one go, so decided i`d hop there via systems, but when I try to plot a course, the computer says `plotting failed`. So i try to hop there manually, but I get so far and then I can`t seem to get any nearer to the system I need to get to.

Do I need a better drive? If that`s the case I think I may have failed 2 jobs I just took. I already failed one because I never realised the time duration on jobs is in real time in Solo mode- Cool, but a little shocking when I started just now thinking I had 4 hours left to see `mission failed!`

Most likely the cause for this is insufficient range on your Frame Shift Drive.
If you're in a non-upgraded Sidewinder, you will find you can't get to many places in your area, due to not having enough jump range.
Pick some short haul missions (always check if you can get to target system via Galaxy Map's search function) and upgrade ship/modules.

Don't forget that, if it's a cargo mission, your jump range will decrease when you accept the mission and the cargo is loaded. I've fallen for that one before. [knocked out]

When in Galaxy Map tab 2 route plotting, in the options to the left of the map there is a slider which you can use to tell the plotting software how much additional mass to allow for. Though re entering the map after picking up cargo will adjust the route to your new mass.

Another thing that can mess up jump range is the amount of fuel on board, it is possible to successfully plot a route with full cargo that fails when you leave the station because you topped up the fuel tanks before launch and the mass is now too much for the plotted jump.

Always fit the best FSD that you can.

We've all made these mistakes and remember as a last resort u always have the option of wiping your game and starting a fresh though now your armed with what you've already learnt

Not a direct help for your problem, but you might want to just fly to some nearby systems, target the local star and scan it.

Astro data is free, and, if you get more than 20 LY from the star(s) you scanned, you can sell it to get yourself upgrade money.

This technique will generate a decent amount of cash for a starter pilot, especially if you ADD a Detailed Surface Scanner to the ship as an early upgrade. Later on, you'll find it is geometrically less effective as a revenue generator.

most likely because your ship and FSD can't make one of the hops, you can try reducing your mass (your ship not you personally), increasing your FSD drive or uprading your FSD with engineers. Failing that you need a different ship that can do very long range jumps like and Asp Explorer or an Anaconda.

A basic Sidewinder has a jump range of about 7.5 LY's, if you upgrade to the nest frame shift drive it will double that. Cost about 160,000.
I would advise that the drive is the first upgrade in any new ship. Makes moving around much easier.
