How do I go about suggesting the addition of a new star system?

I'm trying to find a star in the Ursa Major constellation called TYC 3816-1096-1 but coming up empty handed. I believe its simply not in the game.

Here's the thing, a few years back the guitarist of my favorite band, GWAR, died unexpectedly. In the liner notes of their very next album they included a dedication to him that also announced that the band had had a star named in his honor. (http://i.imgur.com/ciKOfDx.jpg)

I started getting into this band's music at a low point in my life and they helped me to make it through and to not take things so seriously. I haven't got a telescope to find the real star with but, having just recently started playing Elite, I thought I'd do the next best thing and make a sort of virtual pilgrimage there in the game.

How do I propose the addition of TYC 3816-1096-1 to the devs?

If it is an known existing star system then I bet FD would want to include it in the ED galaxy.
Perhaps you could make a proposal and post in the Suggestions & Feedback forum (https://forums.frontier.co.uk/forumdisplay.php/76-Suggestions-amp-Feedback)
Or you might email customer support?

There are lots of star catalogs and they may be using a different one in the game. Star registries are totally unofficial, the names are only valid in the databases of the companies that sell the names. All you can do is put a post in Suggestions, which you have already done.

Question for you. Have you tried doing a little research on TYC 3816-1096-1 on some star charts. It could also help Frontier to locate the star and put it in the right place.

I actually went and installed Google Earth. Can't find it. Image is a bit fuzzy. No other online thing is much help, either.

Bad thing is it could be a scam. To promote something. Like you I use Google earth and nothing so the star not on our charts. I also use Hubble space telescope to find something nothing.

Head over to Skyview Website and enter the co-ordinates 10 50 2 53 38 23 or 53 38 23 10 50 2
This brings up a broad star field image, the first co-ordinates 10 50 2 53 38 23 bring up an image in a new tab as do the second co-ordinates but the second co-ordinates bring up a different image.
I do not know what co-ordinates it wants first whether it is Ascension or Declination. I think it could be the second co-ordinates as i typed in Ursa Major and it brought an image up that looked similar to the second co-ordinates.
I suppose you could always contact an observatory eg. Jodrell Bank and ask them for information on the information written on the album cover. Write out the information though do'nt send an image.
Hope I helped.

Another problem is that these places that 'sell' the naming of stars aren't actually anything to do with NASA or any of the other places that officially name stars. Neither are they registered with any of the organisations that run the cataloguing of stars.

They are the same type of company that will sell you an area on the Moon or on Mars... You give them money and they give you a piece of paper that doesn't even have as much value as the ink that is printed on it.

They are a vanity item only with no guarantee that anyone else will ever about the new name for the star or that someone else will come along and be given the same star under a totally different name.

I had that thought in the back of my head when I set out to find this star. I figured there might be a chance though, but if TYC 3816-1096-1 is just a random name the company pulled out of thin air, then there's probably nothing I can do about it. I'll keep researching though.

Thank you and everybody else who replied.
