Newcomer / Intro How do I hack a comm system in a settlement?

I accepted a pirate kill mission, like I did many other times.

This time, in order to discover the target location, I am required to go to a given settlement an hack into their comm systems.

I tried going there with my FDL, there was actually a comm system but it was inactive. I tried to scan it with any scanner I had (discovery scanner, datalink scanner, composition scanner) but with no result (apart from getting wanted by everybody, attacked by an elite security anaconda and 4 defence turrets, and barely escaping alive).

Now: what equipment do I need to do the job?
Can the job be done by the air, or I will need an SRV?
Is there some particular kind of (I don't know) scanner or limpets to hack into comms?

After years of playing, this game susrprises me with ever more content that makes me come back to the newbie forum...

it can only be done by SRVs and its their secondary fire button while in turret mode (and normal mode as well if i remember correctly)

Yes, SRV time. You'll need to target the comms which will be indicated on screen then use the secondary fire to activate the scanner. Hold the button until the link is established.

Just in case it isn't clear - it is the Data-Link Scanner in the SRV which you use to scan - don't try the other one the SRV has - the composition scanner.

The OP said he used the data link scanner, the one in his ship. I often use this one to do surface missions if I don't want to get out or have no SRV in that ship.

The scanner on the ship works for basic Planet Scan Missions. It doesnt work for Assassinations that have the ground based icon, or for Data Recovery Missions that say you have to infiltrate a base (these look very much like basic Planet Scan missions, but are very different). They require an SRV, and IMHO are just far more trouble than they are worth.

I have done several of these missions. They are not so bad once you are familiar with your equipment on your ship and in your SRV. I believe you can do some scans while in your ship if i remember properly. Did alot in the SRV. With the answers you recieved so far you should be able to get it done now. Good Luck.
