How do I judge the distances in game

Something that hasn't yet been mentioned in this thread: the conversions between the units of length used in the game.

1 LY = 31,557,513 Ls.
1 Ls = 299.3 Mm
1 Mm = 1000 km
1 km = 1000 m

Then there is the old "legacy" unit still used on the System Map: the Astronomical Unit, or AU, used to measure distances of orbits of planets, moons etc. 1 AU is the average distance between the Earth and the Sun.
1 AU = 499 Ls.

It's all pixels.

tbf, certain expressions work better with the old system. "Missed it by miles!", sounds a lot better than "Missed it by kilometres!". "Inching towards the edge.", "Centimetreing towards the edge?"

You just don't use those phrases and replace them with more suitable ones. "Missed it by miles"? Why not - "You couldn't hit the side of a barn with the side of a barn".
It's one of those things about translation.
Bad translation just swaps the words. Good translation keeps the intent.

Ya'll have to remember, frontier could have used Furlongs. So be happy it's at least a metric system!

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/FFF_system - because I sure as heck want to know how many furlongs per fortnight I am from a station, doesn't everyone? And let's not start on the heat percentage meter, which would instead be BTU per foot-fathom.

Remember, there's always a bigger fish.

Thanks everyone. That brought it into perspective much better. Sorry Im late replying to you guys. This info has helped my overshooting a good bit. LMAO

Im new so yeah I didnt know.... Look at my time logged in game if possible. Only a few days. And to be fair I have never claimed to be an expert in anything. ;)

I like that the OP in that thread didn't even know that c = speed of light. Sums up quite a few so-called-experts in these fora.

To be fair I never claimed to be an expert in anything. I only have a few days logged playing so Im a noob. ;)

LY - Light Years... usually used for anything over 0.10LY away (usually distance between systems, but sometimes to very far things like Hutton Orbital)
Ls - Light Seconds... distance to most things outside close range, distance light travels in one second. Your supercruise speed for nonorbit speeds is in "c" which is "speed of light". So if you're travelling at 10c, you will go 10Ls in one second (as that is 10 x the speed of light)
Mm - Million meters... 1000km = 1 Mm. 0.1 Ls = 30Mm = 30,000Km
Km and m you should know.

EDIT: Use that link :)

Fixed.

You quote my remark thinking it was aimed at you, it certainly was not. I was referring to the OP of the thread that was linked to by CMDR S. Russell in post 3 of your (this) thread. The reason I did so was to point out that the person who started that thread set themselves up as an "authority" on distances and speeds in the game, yet didn't even know that "c" is used as denoting the speed of light.

Sorry if you mistook my post but it was actually perfectly clear what I was referring to.

Anyway - keep enjoying the game.
