Horizons how do i know if i cant land or cruise along the surface?

Is their anyway to tell if I can't land on a planet or at least fly near the surface. And can I do it while flying, without looking at the maps?

Approach questionable planets with caution. Set your throttle to the blue zone or lower. If your speed reaches 200 kms and you don't enter orbital cruise (or see the symbology appear) then the planet is NOT landable.

I think in any case where the planet is landable, you get the orbital cruise symbology before you reach 200 kms. Just be careful when approaching very small moons as the scale can be visually deceptive.

Watch your distance carefully. 4 Mm is CLOSE!

In the left hand Navigation panel - the landable bodies have a blue space invaders ship next to them I believe. It would be nice if this was also shown on the Targeted body panel too, to save you having to switch view.

The one thing I can't work out if there is a shortcut for, is telling whether a land installation is one that allows docking, and isn't just an installation with skimmers, etc. It's probably just game blindness though, as I've been playing since the xbox GPP day 1.

Generally, the surface installations with a tower in the icon allow landings, those without don't; the exception appears to be the Engineer bases.

If you look at the system map, landable planets and moons have a blue circle around them.
Tips for planetary landings
Set 50% throttle about 0.3 is away
Initially aim for the centre of the object, then pull up to about 45 degree descent.
Flatten out to 1km of the surface, choose landing site, drop gear and stop. Use thrusters for the last bit. Around 150 metres, you'll get the landing surface indication. Either land gently, or find a suitable site.

If you target a landable planet in Supercruise the bottom left panel on your cockpit display shows distance/speed for approach, instead of the planet type (rocky/icy/gas giant/etc.). Or look at the left-hand Nav panel as described above.

There shoud be this thin blue line appearing when you close the planet. It's the marker to tell you'd enter planetary SC once you pass. IIRC only landable bodies have this. Non landables have a green one I believe.
