How do I make a coaster lift at a 90 degree incline?

I've seen it done before with creations on the Steam Workshop, specifically with the Atheon coaster, but when I try it for myself I can't go above 60 degrees. Is there a trick to it? What am I missing?

Vertical lifts are possible with the Barghest and the Infinity. You can then swap trains.
