Newcomer / Intro How do I mine?

Sorry I'm new to the game, I bought a mining laser and a refinery but when I scoop the minerals that's where I'm clueless. Am I missing another part from my ship or do I just not understand the game at all? Any help would be appreciated.

you need to go to the cargo tab on the right hand side panel and assign the ore you have collected to refinery bins, once the bin is full it will move the content to your cargo hold giving you one tonne of it.

Assign to bins? Sorry, does the refinery come with them equipped already? I saw them in the cargo hold section, but have no idea how to actually assign them to anything.

If you only have 1 bin you click first on the item you want to refine, then you have to eject the ore you don't want, next time you scoop something with the same ore, it will auto process the ore you are working on, so you all you need to do is eject the waste ore that you don't want.

Try this video including mining by Scott Manley: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kYNip6rBkWw The mining action begins at about the 8:00 minute mark. I hope it helps a bit!

It's the UI control keys that you use to highlight the various scooped minerals and select the ones you want to assign to refinery bins or to vent out of the hopper. The bins are inherently part of the refinery; a low-end refinery may have only one bin, which might be adding to your confusion.

I made this mistake when I first started mining in one of the betas. Equipped a sidewinder with a 4 bin refinery to start off - you know get the best gear before even trying it first :). Apparently that took up all 4 tons cargo room so there was no room left to store the finished mineral after. The bins got to 100% and nothing happened after that. Couldn't figure it out for a long time. After a lot of mining and venting and mining again I realized my issue. Hahahha dont do this.

Thank you all for the replies, I finally got it. The first time I tried it I guess there were multiple ore possibilities so I didnt understand why I wasnt processing. Thanks guys.
