Staring at the screen, it says I am in Coelho Station.. I navigate to Auto Launch which should mean launch, as in launch the ship. Instead it opens the local chat window and is waiting for me to type something in chat. All I want to do is start, what is the game waiting for me to do? I had to exit from the tutorial as I could not kill the drones and was bored trying.

Space bar is select, not carriage return. Or set it to whatever you prefer in bindings.
People don't realise that there is actually a manual linked in the launcher window. It is well out of date (disgraceful really) but it does have the basics as far as Horizons goes. For example the default keys / buttons:
