How do I scan without losing my navigation route?!

When I['m jumping through systems, I always see loads of stars etc that are undiscovered. I have my scanners on board, but if I stop to scan, that requires me to target the star to do so.
If I target then I lose the route path I've laid out.
This is especially annoying when I don't recall the star I was heading for OR if the star's name is something like "JXZYCH BEETLEJUICE 98743-DCB LO BYEWTFBBQZORS"

Ahem!

You get my point.
Is there a way to "resume" my navigation? I assume there must be since the orange "path" is still in my galaxy map, but hitting the "Jump" to hyperspace just kicks me out of Supercruise.

First, set your route in the galaxy map. Now scan a planet, and then check your left panel.....in the navigation tab, scroll down the list of planets and systems.....the next system in the route you have planned should have a little symbol next to it.....The little symbol denotes "next system in your selected route".....click it (twice) to target. Then jump.
