Newcomer / Intro how do i start over

I have been killed by pk and i can't even land yet. you should make the docking computer available for lets say another 65 dollars real cash.. so we can play teh game too. I have fines for landing on a pad that timed out.. i have died so many times and cant even land yet.. i went to an asteroid field and i couold do nothing but shoot them to no effect.. so .. what am i supposed to do with this game i cant even play? yes i tried the tutorials.. which are somewhat useless cus they dont tell you what buttons to push (they should use default) Yes i knoiw if i keep dying for another year i can prob be able to land.. but how do i start over from the shame of my past. how do i make a new account? without buying another copy of the game. I want to play this with family and friends.. but it is so far.. quite unplayable.. please no stock answers of practice.. or everyone else on the planet does fine. if you can't help then please do not replay.. HOW DO I START OVER PLEASE >> without debt. or record!

Do the tutorials and combat training in the main menu. There you can practise this until docking is no problem anymore. And always activate landing gear and use your lateral thrusters when landing.

Honest answer - I don't think you can...
You can clear your save that will take you all the way back to initial sidewinder and 1000cr but I'm not sure what stats are reset apart from faction stuff.
Test this and see.

Get into the main menu, select options and then select 'Clear Save'. That will wipe out everything so you can start again from scratch.

Thank you all! Especially for your kind patience at a frustrated noob and helpful answers!

You can also look for docking videos on youtube or so. Maybe you can learn something there as well.

There are many people who have problems with docking....I see these threads once or twice a week here, so you are not alone....and most guys now are an ace at landing ;)

The combat training is very good for practising. Worth it after you are familiar with docking.

If you seriously can't dock then repeat the docking tutorial until you can and watch youtube videos of the docking tutorial until you've mastered it.

Then check out youtube videos for docking at other station types such outposts.

You're going to need to learn how to dock, you'll be doing that A LOT. Docking is also a major part of Elite (and always has been). Don't shy away from it, remember it's a big part of the game and learn how to do it. There's tons of help out there and ask your questions here in the forum. Lots of friendly advice for newcomers.

You are welcome, and remember, everybody who plays this game was a newbie at some point (even if it was 30 years ago when the original Elite came out!). Do NOT forget to request docking clearance 7.5KM out (while you still have time, and are not having to concentrate on flying), as being shot up for trespassing is a REALLY bad way to end an enjoyable flight. Saying that, if you decide later to get one, you don't mind the fact it takes longer, loss of one internal slot and other commanders making silly comments ("still got the training wheels on, I see!"), the docking computer (at 4,500cr) does help a bit (provided you make sure to monitor it until "Docking Successful" happens, as it can and does get it wrong at times).

Depending on what control system you are using it may also be worth looking at a few guides regarding joystick/keyboard and mouse setup (especially if you are using KB & M)

Having your control system set up properly can be a huge help with docking/combat.

For new guys having troubles, I would suggest getting closer to the station, and near the entryway. Get in a postion to enter the station and stop 1.5k-2.0k out, THEN request permission to dock. This way, half of the alloted docking time won't be wasted just by flying around to the front and getting through the door. There will be lots of extra time to get to the pad and try to land.
.
Also, once across the entryway, the little compass next to the radar will show where the landing pad is...just in case the holo-grid around it is not working (a bug which is supposed to be getting a fix in v1.1 coming in a couple weeks).
.
Once across the station threshold, deploy landing gear and find the landing pad. Point your nose towards it and gently fly down to it. Eventually, the landing radar will kick in, at which point you can level off and use the lateral and vertical thrusters to move side/side/up/down to get down onto the pad. Oh, and diverting all power to systems will boost up your shield strength and as a side-benefit take power from your engines to allow you to fly even slower if you need to.

I agree with the distance change, as those with a lack of experience will probably take longer to dock, and could run out of time if they had further to fly. Saying that though, do NOT forget to get that docking clearance for the reason stated!

You get better with every docking you do. I can dock a Type 9 at Coriolis Stations with 130 speed asleep and I had to practise docking in the tutorial before I started with the game. We all started like that :)

Out of interest what control method are you using?
I use keyboard and mouse and was struggling like yourself. I found that by changing the Roll to Yaw using the mouse helped, I then bound the Roll to keys 1 and 2.

Yes I found changing roll to yaw made a huge difference too (in options(
I set Q and E to roll keys and then left hand on those keys and right hand on mouse made for better flight control.

I'm running a Hotas setup. Took the premade control setting for x55 and had to change 4-5 buttons and then I went straight for tutorials and combat training. I won't ever return to mouse and keyboard.

yep perfect landing.. seconds away from docking and permission to land revoked!

of course i got broken up a bit first time in had to abort.. one of those spining cube stations. and yah i got hooked on elite with the commodore 64 .. it was hard to land then too.. but a bit easier than this i think.

at this point i'm going to owe more credits than there are in the universe.. the help to restart must only apply to single player mode. In THIS universe how do i wipe my slate clean.. records.. debt etc.. and start over? Any help? Do i have to buy another copy of the game? question: how do i restart from zero!?!?

As stated earlier in the thread, this should do it. You are wiping your game save file, so the game will think you are starting for the very first time with a new character.
Get into the main menu, select options and then select 'Clear Save'.

I've never done it myself, but as other said, go to the menu and select Clear Saves.

Back to docking, I realised early on this was a skill I'd need, so (back in Beta testing, before docking got added to tutorials) I went to Solo mode and did 20 or so launches, exits, turn around, request dock, enter, dock. Rinse and repeat. Until, a) I stopped hitting the 'letterbox', b) I could find my pad without needing to turn around, c) I could hit the pad (with gear down!) and not slam into buildings.

I know you said "don't tell me to practice", but Elite is a game of repetition - whether it's docking, supercruising, combat, trading, mining, exploring, fuel scooping, cargo scooping, etc. Once I got reasonably ok at docking (i.e. not dying) I moved on to learning other skills. And six months on I'm enjoying every minute and don't die quite as much!

Flying comes easy to me, but I'll not call myself an expert either.
Even for me docking a sidewinder was a bit of a challenge on the first run and will be all over again when I buy a new ship with different flight handling.

If docking is still difficult task and you have not mastered it yet, than taking it slow would your main goal, if follow the bellow key points pretty much all the time.
-Putting maximum strength in system (shields) should be your first priority.
-Lower your landing gear on time when your outside and keep it lowered when your are inside the station, this will cause your ship to slow down and it's top speed should be limited to about 100 (this goes for all ships)
-Bring your throttle down to 50%, this makes it the most maneuverable and responsive, if it still feels to fast, don't hesitate to bring down your throttle even more.
-Go easy on the lateral thrusters, use in burst, they will feel much more responsive at lower speeds and with your throttle at 50%
