How do I travel to Empire space from Federation in my sidewinder?

Use the discovery scanner along the way, it shud cover any fuel cost and net you some profit and keep dock at 3rd or 4th system to make sure you are auto saved along the way so in worst case senario you dont have to redo long streches of the trip to Reach imperial Space around achenar.
And dump all cargo racks to speed up jump range, thus fewer jumps.

edit and dump both guns as they add mass to ship , les mass = more range.

I headed out for the Alliance but it's all a matter of seeing which routes actually make it to the area you're looking for and that is based on your jump range when loaded so just point toward an imperial system that has a route and go from there.

BTW took me hours to get to where I was going... it won't be quick I can tell you that for sure.

This is really confusing. I can see the word Achenar written on the galaxy map but when I pan over to it the word moves around under me. I'm finding it really hard to find a path to anything.

Use the search button on the galaxy map and type Achenar there - it can be quite a distance, at present I can't get there as it has no connecting route, but that could just be my starting position.
If your in a sidewinder sell everything - guns and shields to give youself maximum range - but remember you'll had it if you hit something or get into a fight! :D

Likewise. It took me perhaps 4 hours to travel from the middle of Federation space and reach the outskirts of Alliance space. I enjoyed the journey though, did some trading along the way and made a decent profit from exploration.

When plotting my course I found it useful to zoom out and toggle the alliegance color indicator, effectively making the potential destination systems blink. That made it easy to quickly identify the closest cluster of Alliance systems. Then I'd plan the next 5-6 jumps towards them, rinse and repeat.

Be aware that the navigation system only shows connecting routes up to your maximum fuel tank, not factoring in any fuel scooping or docking to refuel.
So if you just type in Achenar and set destination, it is likely there is no linking Yellow line, but that does not mean it is out of range, you may have to Plot the route in several legs.
You can reach even as far as the Pleiades star cluster in a stripped out and slightly upgraded sidewinder if you take the time and plan the route
