I bought planet coaster (not on steam) and I see on youtube people getting the update. is there a way to update it because I bought the game for £34 and I don't want the money to go to waste

The update is free and normally automatic through steam.
You could just open the game and look on the lower left. If it is version 1.1.1xxxxxx you have the winter update (1.1.0) and it's patch (1.1.1).
The only way to run the game is through steam and it doesn't matter if you bought it through Frontier or Steam.
