How do people decide which factions to support?

I'm playing a minor role in the civil war in Eravate. Doing minor transport missions in support of the Traditional Eravate Autocracy, only reason I picked them is because they had a mission in the way I was heading first of all and I consider myself a loyal guy, they paid me well. I'll keep working for them rather than turncoat to the opposition. Gonna try to work my way up the ranks, see what happens when I become super trusted.

So how do others decide who to support?

I assume there's a way somewhere to get a bit of background/info on the faction in game. All I know about the TEA is they're a dictatorship (but one that pays well for easy missions). Maybe in the future I'll base my choices on the factions goals.

there is no need to afiiliate yourself with any factions as an independent cmdr.

but there is a lot of fun doing it.

when i returned from my second or third exploration trip with my adder, i decided to pick a home. i helped the independent controlling faction against the local pirates as well as federal factions trying to take over, and even helped it expanding to two other systems, making consumer electronics legal in a former theocracy. why i picked them? because they were indipendent.

lost the system later to a wing of federal bounty hunters.

today i either help player groups with their minor factions, or i help factions that have something special .... for exampel a rare federal anarchy faction.

Most players (afaik) wouldn't have a specific minor faction that they support, but instead they'd have a few, across different stations, based on their major faction instead.

Basically, if I like the Empire, then I'll rank up with Empire minor factions at key locations. I don't generally bother doing missions for non-Empire, but I don't have a specific minor faction that I support. Most players pay more attention to major than minor, as it gives them a network of high-paying missions in whatever locations they need, while also building towards that all-important naval/major rank that locks some ships in the game.

As for how people choose minor faction to play BGS? Couldn't tell ya ....

I haven't looked at the major factions yet. How do you check to see what a minor faction is aligned with?

You state support for major factions via Power Play, right? So if it turns out say, TEA are allied with the Empire, by helping TEA out it also will boost my standing with the Empire inm power play?

Or is power play something different?

I'm new to the game so gonna stick with helping out a minor faction for now until I've got to grips with everything (especially combat, doing the combat mentor missions is the next plan of attack). The Eravate Civil War seems minor enough and pays well enough to both earn and avoid me getting blasted by someone out of my league.

looking at how much interest playing the Backgroundsimulation got after player groups got minor factions named after the ingame, i think it safe to say, that most players of a group back the minor faction of their group, which mostly has some kind of lore behind it depending on the ethos of the group.

there is also another reason to do so ... some of those factions are controlling 15-30 system by now, and some over 40 stations - and if they are in boom, you have a whole bubble of different economies to run missions from.

you see the superpower icon in the right hand panel next to a faction as well as on the mission board, and it is also written on the mission board (Allegiance: Empire .... for exampel)

Or is power play something different?

don't get me started ... okay... starting ... The president of the federation controls imperial systems in his private time ... as well as the Admiral of the Imperial Fleet.

powerplay: you work for rich guys and girls exploiting system and pay you peanuts and use their agents to increase their "command capital".

superpowers: larger political constructs, which generally come with a set of shared values, faults, and ideas of legality/illegality. federation: corrupt consumer terror. imperial: a monarchy allowig slavery. alliance: the good guys on the outside, while still meddling with local politics. pick one of them. or fight for independence of all superpowers.

minor factions: some have alligned themself with a superpower, others don't. all have a jurisdiction, see: https://forums.frontier.co.uk/showthread.php/132071-Help-me-find-all-the-Government-Descriptions

Power play is different, aligning yourself with a particular person in a superpower.
You can see which superpower a faction is aligned with (if any) on the system map - the first tab lists all the factions and what their allegiance is.

EDIT: Ninjaed. :p

^ This is how I operate. I'm an Imperial at heart, but I also know that there are good eggs within the Feds, Allis, and Indies. I only take missions that are legal and/or for the good of others. Even though I don't really roleplay, this is a set rule I tend to follow. Lawful Neutral to the last.

I try to pick the side which I think is most likely to win/benefit me. I may pick a side but I'm still really only on my side.

I like the path your taking.
I own a small corporation (corporate faction, very low influence) that deals in extraction. I take little bags of gems around to potential clients.
Last night I decided to partner up with another firm and do favours for them. I got a contract from my new partner to go collect the booze to celebrate and also got a booze collection from my own faction. Whilst I was knocking about getting the alcho, just for a laugh, they sent hijackers after me to intercept the booze. This is tidy gameplay. Think of your ship like a sports car and your just knocking about doing your buisness. Theres lots of little missions flows that pop up whilst your bouncing around.
Find a role for yourself ingame and use the contacts all around to enrich it.
I run a buisness moving gems around. I'm involved with drugs and guns, killings. I took the path of gangster.

So many names, so many minor factions, it's pretty challenging to keep things straight.

So I was in a system this past weekend, sorry I don't remember the name. But they were experiencing a famine due to something or other. I thought I'd hang out here and try to give them a hand. But I'm not really a trader, I'm a delivery guy. Delivering data, cargo and goods, but I don't buy anything to deliver, only take the missions where they give me the cargo to deliver. So I did several of those, but everytime I took one, I ended up in a different system, with a different minor faction, working on their own troubles. By the time it was all said and done, I couldn't remember where I had wanted to help them out at, plus came to the conclusion that my delivery runs weren't really going to help them any, so I've just decided to forgo caring about the individual systems I ended up in. As long as I'm being paid to deliver stuff, I guess I'm ok with that.

So long story short, I don't consciously support any minor factions, I work for whoever pays me.

You can own corporations? Awesome.

I really like this game. So much depth to it.

Lol, I choose factions that sound cool and provide a good system to 'live' in...most are player factions.

A few I've chose in the past include...

The Earth Defense Fleet - Okinura
One of the strongest Federation factions in the game, they dominate multiple systems which means I can find work easily and Okinura has a nice Chemical Manipulators spawn point to farm.

The Brotherhood of the Dark Circle - Diaguandri
Space necromancers? Ray Gateway in Diaguandri has outstanding outfitting and it's also a LYR system so everything is 15% off. Not a big deal when you're buying a Cobra or Diamondback but once you start putting together Pythons and 'Condas that 15% saves you a fortune!

Currently with the Ice Storm Squadron for some Powerplay RP, bit of a remote faction though...

I'm not interested in the inner politics of this faction or that alliance. Credits. Pay me and I'll do your job. I don't need the Federation coming down on me any more than they already do.

I am a Imperial pilot through and through ( I really like their ships and style). I will run missions in Federation, Alliance or Independent space, but I don't care what minor faction they are whether they are criminal or not. If I am in the Empire though I am a fine upstanding citizen who will never work for criminal factions.

It's often worth concentrating on one system, or one faction (sometimes I just do missions for all factions to get hold of the better quality missions you get after becoming allied with them). Often I drop a ship in the system I need to get back to, so it appears on the galmap (I guess I could use a bookmark, but hey, I like ships :) )

At the moment some of us are trying to 'liberate' some of the illegal rare goods by changing who owns the systems they come from: https://forums.frontier.co.uk/showthread.php/354783-Community-Campaign-to-Liberate-Rare-Goods

It's quite relaxing as Limoncello does all the hard thinking, we're just the hired muscle :)

Edit: And another reason to get allied with certain factions is to get access to permit locked systems - this is also fun, as you get a reward once allied: https://forums.frontier.co.uk/showthread.php/122593-Updated-Permit-List

Edit2: And some permits, like Sirius, are very useful if you want to do engineering in the future :)
