How do player bounties work?

it really depends on what and where you are doing. interdictions are rare, but increase with more bounties - and planetary stuff is no problem. going with a wanted ship somewhere with system security (high res) can be a problem, and you sometimes get bountyhunters around haz res or comp nav beacons (i sometimes use haz res to get stolen cargo plus crimes for bgs reasons). i mainly use hot ships for pve piracy with interdictions (no problem there) and the various illegal planetary missions (got a nice dbs for that). and i have two very hot haulers for abandoning missions with fines - one is called Scapegoat, the other Scapa Flow.

I haven’t really entered into the bgs even after three years of playing. As such I think my C&P knowledge has been limited to the most basic elements. I’m very curious about your use of Haulers for abandoning missions with fines. Is this essentially stealing mission cargo for black markets (and BGS purposes) and only abandoning the mission once you’ve swapped ships?

I think I may have to look deeper into the dark side of Elite, I’m slightly shocked to have to admit how shallow my gameplay may have been up until now.

Yes...
Although there are circumstances where cargo may be 'appropriated' without being fined it is always a sensible move to change to a 'throwaway' ship before abandoning a mission, this ship is never flown, naturally ;)

I use (empty) Sidewinders as bookmarks for my module storage locations so they’d make perfect throwaways as they’re never flown. I can’t believe how untouched I’ve left some aspects of this game. If it’s a mile wide and an inch deep I dread to think how shallow that makes me :)

Not shallow, probably just a little too honest :ROFLMAO:
I appear to have a reputation for stealing everything that isn't welded down... It's very unkind as I leave anything that isn't going to make a very good profit 😤
