How do rares work right now?

There's a lot of advice out there concerning rares trading. Much of it is out of date. For example, I've seen that you can dock, buy up the goods, wait ten minutes and buy up another load until the Supply column changes from "0 HIGH" to blank. I've also seen that you have to sell your goods before any more will spawn. I've never seen this happen; the only way I can get more goods to appear seems to be to leave the station, dock elsewhere and come back later.

So my question is, how do the mechanics work right now? Is there still a personal allocation that you can reach without ever leaving the starport?

Yes, you get allocated a fixed amount, it varies per station. Not fun if you hate spreadsheets, but it tells you all you need to know!

Yes,

There is a limit to the amount of specific rares you can have (Lavian Brandy, max 7T personal allocation).

They do respawn, but you have to wait and you also have to account for other pilots buying them in the process, so you may not see them respawn for a good while.

What I do is simple enough. I do the Lave cluster twice (with a short break) and then head off to sell them. I don't do the long rare runs that often and when I do it's just for something different. I find that if you have a type 7 and a decent trade route, you can make just as much if not more than rares and you're also upping your local rep where you're trading.

I trade rares much less now then I did in the re spawn times. AFAIK rares do not respawn now, once you buy a supply you have to sell those tonnes before that station sells you more stock. So what I do it pick 3 or 4 rares stations and fly to each one getting around 20 tonnes worth. Then you have to fly over 140lys to sell at max profit.

They respawn.. check my link. Also other cmdr's do not affect your spawn rate. Each rate is per cmdr

As 777Driver has said, you have an allocation which isn't effected by other CMDR's. No need to leave the station, you will just need to wait for the re-spawn.

I find it best to buy the available amount upon arrival and then exit Startport Services whilst waiting for the re-spawn. Not sure if it speeds things up, but if you sit there with the Commodities Market open I don't think it automatically refreshes, but I could be wrong.

If you're in the area of a small cluster then it can be worth while going to the next station and then coming back, other wise have a cup of tea & browse the forum :p

No changes to the re-spawns on the rares. You can only get your Max allocation each visit. Even if you leave and fly around as you've said and return, you'll never get over your Max allocation.

I love spreadsheets!

Have I got this right?

  1. Fly to Diso
  2. Buy 1 to 10 tons of Diso Ma Corn
  3. Wait ten minutes
  4. Buy another 1 to 10 tons of Diso Ma Corn
  5. Wait ten minutes
  6. Do that again
  7. Wait ten minutes
  8. Keep doing that
  9. Wait ten minutes
  10. Do it a bit more until I have 15t of Diso Ma Corn
  11. Go and sell the Diso Ma Corn
  12. Come back and do it all again

If I'm lucky, I might get 10t the first time I go into the commodities market. If 5t spawns the second time, I can get my full allocation with two purchases and a ten minute wait between them. If I'm not lucky, I'll only get 1t each time I enter the commodities market, and I'll have to go back fifteen times, and wait a total of 140 minutes, to get my full allocation.

Sorry if I seem a bit thick. It's because I'm a bit thick.

It will respawn every 10 minutes unless you already got the max amount. Waiting for one respawn is usually enough. Either you then get the max amount allowed, or pretty close to it. From time to time you even get lucky and don't have to wait around at all.

Yes, you have that right, although it's rare for you to end up only getting 1t at a time, if not unlucky. Worse case it'll take 3 re-spawns for you to get your fully allocation.

That is pretty much spot on, except I tend not to wait around unless I'm docked and doing something outside of the game. I'll usually wait for 1 or 2 respawns then move on to the next destination.

Use this tool to plan your routes.

The links are two examples one is a basic quick route, the other is extremely long.

Yes, but they may stop supplying you before you hit max allocation, ie if you get 5t and 6t of Orrere Viscious Brew, supply can stop even though you could get up to 16.

Because of the nerf to rates where you get a limited supply, trading regular goods at 2500/2600(or even less) cr per ton on round trip routes will pay out more credits faster by far. You do less jumps you do less waiting for rates to respawn and make more credits way faster.

Now if you're just starting out rare trades are great until you can by a cargo ship.

I've always seen it as a fun way to explore populated space while making money, nearly all destinations are Earth like worlds, and the routes take you everywhere. I still do circuits in my bigger ships, rares are also perfect if you buy a big freighter early and have to choose between holding money for insurance or buying regular cargo. Rares are incredibly cheap yet make you millions, you need very little cash outlay.

True. If you're not looking for cr/hour then Yeh do them. But it you're looking to maximize your profits its a waste of time. Once you have decent money they become a pointless part of the game. Hope they add other ways to make money soon.

I have never had the patience to wait. There are clusters. Its quicker to do loop twice. I never bother with distant stations from sun. Well with one exception that is about 2000 ls but gives 20 t regularly. I find if you are hamering the run I got low spawn numbers.
Fantastic for cobra sized class found it took long time to fill asp but when it did. Profit felt amazing.

Rares do respawn! But certain stations with large max allocations per commanders have respawn limit. Once you hit that limit, it will not respawn anymore. That respawn limit seems to be half of max. For instance, Altair's max allocation is 34. You might get 5 in your first visist. You don't have to leave. Sit there and wait... It seems to be 20 minutes. It will respawn, and the 2nd spawn seems to always make up 17. It will not spawn more to exceed that half max allocation, until you sell them.

I know three "special" stations have this "rule" applied. Altair, Sanuma, and Hip 80364. And I am quite certain about these three stations and this rule, b/c I recorded all my rare runs merticulously on spreadsheet, hundreds of them. Lave et. al. will respawn until you get the max. But their max are like 8 to 14, anyway. It seems to me that any station with max allocation over 30 have this rule applied. I guess it's a way to drive commanders on the "road" to generate traffic and to vacate landing pads.

Don't wait, unless you are off somewhere to do some errands, otherwise with the 20 minutes wait, I could have run though an entire rare run roundtrip. You are wasting your time, if you goal for these rare runs is to make more money.

Totally disagree regarding what you're saying regarding the "That respawn limit seems to be half of max."

If no more are re-spawning that is the Max, what makes you think it's any higher?

The example you gave (Altair - Altairian Skin) I don't follow as I can't find any source that indicates that the Max is 34t, it appears to be 14t.

Sorry, according to my spreadsheet, Altair max is 28, regeneration limit is 14. Sanuma max is 34, regeneration limit 17. I mixed up Altair and Sanuma. By "according to my speadsheet", it means that's what I have seen on first generation. Basically, I record the first generation #, as well as the current max, update it if I see a bigger #. So, my last rare run spreadsheet contains the max I have seen so far. I also test the regeneration limit by sitting at the station, go run some errands, come back, grab more items, repeat... Until it doesn't increase anymore. If the regeneration limit matches 1/2 of max, then I am relatively sure that I have probed out the max.
