Ship Builds & Load Outs How do shield generators work?

Weapons cause damage by delivering energy. Strictly, energy focussed in time and space - so power per unit area is a rough indication. There's a mass-energy equivalence. It is not unreasonable that a larger mass requires a greater minimum shielding, but the physical justifications would be - a little convoluted. You need the Third Scientific Revolution to explain this - and the Group Law Theory. It will all be explained in my new book coming out in December. PM me for a free copy (first 50, it will need some exposure)

Regards

Edit: P.S. According to Elite lore the shields are magnetic, but there simply isn't the strength there. The EM force is just a (weak) manifestation of the electric force. I'm working on something more believable.

Not to be that guy, but couldn't they just have went with, for talk's sake...

Class A shield = 500 "units" of shield strength.
Class B shield = 450 "units" of shield strength.

And so on, or something along those lines? Hull damage is calculated visibly on a percentage rating which is displayed on your screen at all times. I really like the visual of the 3 rings for the shields, but an actual number would help immensely.

I'll ignore your troll bait, and just ask...

We have 5 different numbers...

Base hull mass.
Hull mass with loadout.
Hull mass with loadout and full cargo/fuel.

Opt shield strength.
Max shield strength.

So...

When you refer to mass, do you mean base hull mass, hull mass with loadout, or hull mass with loadout and full cargo/fuel?

I'm still confused with this one

Anyone can really explain this in detail?
