How do ship prices work?

I am confuddled by this.

I bought myself a Hauler and after a while I thought I would try out an Eagle MKII. It's beta so I thought I would like to try as many as possible. However...

I had around 10k credits and when I went to buy the ship it said the Eagle was around minus 6k. I ssume this means I would get 6k back from the sale of my Hauler?

I thought I would do a few more trade runs and I basically doubled my money. However when I go to buy the Eagle it still says around minus 6k. How does that work?

Hi Buddy, it means when you buy the eagle you will get 6k back, it does not matter how much cash you have.

Your hauler is worth 20k and a eagle costs 14k roughly :)

You get the money back for the current ship and all the equipment that you bought for it. So yes you get 6k back when you buy an eagle if you are flying a hauler now.
