This thought has been with me ever since the UP were first discovered. More recently I have found myself thinking, "What constitutes communication?"
This is all purely conjecture ahead~
Let's say there are seven species or syntheticraces in our immediate future:
Soontill
Merope
Thargoids
Heart and Soul
Lysoom
Pueleia
Jacques
I list these by either name or a speculation of where they might be located.
Taking account our failure to encounter some of these I'll presume three of them are dead, hiding, or have left this galaxy:
Thargoids
Soontil
Heart and Soul
At least one of these races possessed superlative technologies:
Thargoids
It is possible at least one of these is synthetic:
Lysoom or Pueleia
With all of this taken together a fairly simple description comes to mind how to think of how we might encounter one of these races:
- Abandoned ruins: irradiated, chemical weapons attacked, or other malidy
- Deserted ruins: nothing wrong with the site, abandoned for reasons of inability to defend
- store houses (abandoned)
- store houses (occupied)
- store houses (unoccupied, but in use)
- Rogue AI relics: Drones basically like our sentinels might be if we were wiped out... perpetually guarding nothing any longer... but still there... still active... still hostile.
- Indirect Contact: Sitings
- Indirect Contact: Deliberate show of presence
- Direct contact with ship-to-ship comms
- Direct contact via SRV
- Direct contact via forced entry to ship
- Other-unknowns
The only question I really want to ask is, "If you had a chance to communicate where would you begin?"
I'd try to establish a True-False code.
a. - Flash lights 1 second, pause 1 second; repeat 3 times.
b. - Wait one second after sequence a is finished then Flash lights three times rapidly.
c. - repeat a.
d. - Flash lights 4 times. Honk.
Having watched Babylon 5 I realize all this leads to is the Earth-Minbari War. Therefore, I have absolutely no idea how I'd go about signally non-hostilities. Has anyone imagined anything about this? Is it even possible?
We have a fairly limited amount of ability to communicate from our ships to someone else. And that's within our own species. I have absolutely no idea where to begin with another.
