How do you align with a player faction?

First off, my created player faction was approved and I see it in the game.

So, where do I manage this player faction? Aren't there more things I can see under the hood since it's my player faction?

And, if not, how do I align myself to my own player faction? I've seen other ships flying around and when you select their ship, you can see which player faction they are aligned to. How do I do that?

Thanks!!

Create a Squadron.
Then align that squadron to the minor faction.

Remember that just because you requested it to be put it in game - it’s not exclusively “your” Minor Faction.
Any CMDR can support it.
Any Squadron can align to it.

Align via squadron.

Manage it? It's really just another minor faction, but you named it. You manage it like you would any random minor faction you encounter in the game - try to manipulate the BGS and other factions in the system to your benefit.

Sounds like someone didn't do his research before asking for stuff... oops ;)

I was applying for factions before Squadrons were implemented.

So I had a follow up question, which needed to be prefaced by the question you already answered; I recall reading that the CONTROLLING faction has control over the security of the system (low, med, high, etc.).

Is this no longer a thing?

Thanks!

Controlling faction may effect security (if it does, its not much unless you are anarchy). You don't control it. You don't control anything at all except being the official communication with fd.

Ever since player factions was introduced, players had no control over these factions, these are basically just as any other factions in the game.

So your research about player factions was very incomplete.

Sure, but you'll need to elevate your faction to a position where they are the Controlling faction. Even then you will not have any actual 'control' over anything. It simply means that NPC minor faction (named by you) is the controlling NPC faction within the BGS.

Is this functionality handled through Squadrons now?

You don't.

You didn't actually MAKE a faction, you NAMED a faction - a faction of NPC's.

You manage nothing. You own nothing. You get nothing. You control nothing.

Squadrons can align themselves with a faction, but they still do not belong to that faction. They're like a group of migrant works, who always ride the same bus, to the same farms, to pick the same crops, year after year. That's as close as you get.

Isn't it great?

And this isn't snark, it's blunt honesty. And while it's true, the controlling faction of a system does play a part in determining the security level of that system, it's purely arbitrary and determined by database information behind the scenes. If that controlling faction is, let's say, a Corporate faction, with a High Security level and they are displaced by an Anarchy faction in that system, the security might drop to Low, and might not ever rise above Medium through concentrated efforts. That's how the Controlling Faction Controls system security. Not you.

Personally, I think this system is fantastic. It keeps egos in check. It ensures the game stays out of the hands of players who would simply s--t all over it and walk away. It prevents unplayable regions, and keeps us from having to play micro-manager. There are plenty of games for that sort of play out there already, and we simply do not need another one here.

Thanks for the response and detailed explanation. I think what I read clearly misrepresented the "control" a player faction would have if they become the controlling faction. I do see your argument in how this is a good thing, but, on the other hand, I feel like creating a player faction, you should maybe have some things to alter to so to speak put your stamp on the system (even if minor or simply cosmetic).

Also, btw, didn't take anything you said as snark. Appreciate the reply and honesty.

Yes, depending on what you mean by "control over the security"
- the faction that controls the system is responsible for deploying police ships (or being an Anarchy faction and largely abolishing them, which obviously affects security)
- the basic security level of the system is a property of the system independent of its controller, but the current security level is influenced somewhat by the controlling faction's active BGS states. In many systems this effect is not significant enough to change which of the L/M/H bands the system is in, though.

Glad to clarify. I do believe, though it has been quite some time, that the individual(s) who are on record as the faction lead, have some sway over CG's for that particular faction, via correspondence with Frontier. Pretty sure that sway is also somewhat limited, and there was a thread around here somewhere...

There it is: https://forums.frontier.co.uk/showt...ity-Goals-Minor-Factions-and-becoming-a-power

Had to do some digging. It's also worth noting that there can be considerable delay between the time a request is submitted and when it actually happens - enough so that it's spawned a number of threads asking if they're still even doing this. Last I knew, they were, it's just a slow process, and they get more than just a few requests regularly. Though I will admit, it has been a while since I've followed any of this particularly closely. I'd kicked around the idea of going through this whole process myself, but in the end, I decided to make no decisions and see how things shape up as the game continues to develop and grow.
