How do you control when using VR and can't see the keyboard?

hi

all new here :)

i wonder how do you control when you can't see the keyboard?

i guess advanced joystick can help?

i only have an old extreme 3d pro, and the limit controls, so any tips are welcome :)

thanks :)

i wonder if it's possible to somehow double the buttons on the joystic like having somekind of 'shift' key?

so the hat switch could be used both for manoeuvre the spaceship and controlling the menus?

mayby xpadder could be used for this?

A good HOTAS controller is a negligible cost compared to the price of the Rift and the computer needed to run it, so most of us around here have kind of high end setups. You should be able to use the 3d pro but you might have to come up with some way of holding it to the desk so you don't have it sliding around if you have your left hand on the keyboard and your right hand on the joystick.

You don't even need xpadder for it, just go into controls and hold down your shift key + the button you want to use with it and it'll work fine in most cases.

by 'shift' i mean, get extra functions for the joystick, not acually pressing the shift key on the keyboard, as it's hard to see the keyoard.

but well somehow you did answer my question - i just set "next panel tab" to "left shift + joy pov1", and then use xpadder to bind the shiftkey to a button on the joystick.....well i thought i could - it's seems that E:D don't that combination "left shift + joy pov1".

well i'll have to get some better joystick then...... next month..

You don't have to use the 'shift' key on the keyboard, you can designate a button on the joystick/throttle as a 'shift' key. All from within the game, no extra software needed.

I'd suggest a combination of a good HOTAS and in addition perhaps voicecontrol.
I can blindly operate my X55 HOTAS and access all necessary functions.

ah ok, got i figured out :) thanks. just one quick question - can one 'apply' changes without having to go down though all the settings?

You can see the keyboard if you look down the 'nose slit' Theres a slight gap there. Luckily my keyboard has backlight keys so can manage to see them.

I have this same question. I go into controls to change and test one thing and have to scroll ALL the way to the bottom. On the X52 profile that is one big list to scroll through.

Use the force, Luke.

Seriously though, standard Rift stuff... nose peeks, key counting (starting from escape, count down and then across to find the Q key, and good mapping so everything is close together.

you put one hand on the keyboard,
and you put your other hand on your,,em,,joystick

Although I appreciate the 'enlightened' comments ;), I do know I can use both my keyboard and mouse to navigate while in the RIFT and currently do that, and it sounds the OP knows that too now.
My question is when I am testing assigning keys on my X52, can I assign and apply immediately as opposed to scrolling down through what seems like hundreds of possible key reassignments before I get to APPLY. Its not that big of a deal, but would make key assignment faster as I am experimenting with key assignments now.

When I first started rifting, I used voice attack and a joystick........

Since I have got the X-55 HOTAS, have not used VA - everything is on the X55.

Easy peasey.....

Nosh

How about Voice Attack? It is only a few dollars and you can just use your voice to control most functions of the game that don't fit on your joystick.

the extreme 3d joystick is decent. that + voice attack is plenty for the intro setup.
voice attack is $8 and completely worth the price.

eventually you want hotas just for the realism...so your avatar matches your setup ish.

keyboard is kinda wonky, but works well enough. Takes a bit to get used to. Subnautica has amazing VR but uses keyboard or gamepad (i think) works well enough for the experience with keyboard.

I found out that you Can use The mouse.

That's what I do as well. I don't have a fancy HOTAS. I use an Xbox360 gamepad, but it is set up completely differently to the default. I'm not using my mouse so the mouse buttons are three additional buttons. The side panels come up when I look in their direction so the (X)+(<=) and (X)+(=>) gamepad assignments are free for other functions.

Oh! And I use Voice Attack as well <grin>.

Just by touch typing. If you learn to touch type you never have to look at the keyboard again.

I put certain controls in positions that are easy to find if I've needed to take my hand(s) off the keyboard. Caps Lock has a step on it so it's easy to find (and the home row) purely by feel. Things like weapon controls and targeting I put around the edge of the num pad because I can take my hand off the mouse and find all the edge of the numpad keys very fast. I have a nice keyboard (Unicomp - IBM Model M buckling spring design)

For messages and other typing, well, I just find the home row and touch type!

Joystick + Throttle + "taped" sections on my keyboard to recognize basic functions such as keystroke 'G' for galaxy map or 'M' for system map, taped F12 to recenter the Rift.
