How do you do skimmer missions?

The way I do them is, I start a few dozen kms from the target installation. I fly toward it and I swoop in on POIs that I see. If I'm not wanted yet, then I land and shoot the skimmers with the SRV. Once I'm wanted, I hit them from the air with rockets.

If I make it to the installation without meeting my quota, I attack the station with rockets.

Am I on the right track with this?

Just shoot the skimmers from your ship with dumbfire missiles. You dont need to use an srv. When you start shooting you'll get wanted status but you can clear your bounties and fines at an interstellar factors.

Didn't realize that dumb dumbs still worked on skimmer's. I though it had been nerfed. I use to park about a half click above the base and rain dumb dumbs down on the little 's until they were gone. Was told back in Jan. 18, that one can't use them anylonger, only shooting them from an srv works. Recon I'll have to load some dumb dumbs again and try my luck.

What I almost always used to do is land in the base, get in the SRV to trigger the skimmers then straight back into the ship (assuming the stupid possessed throttle on the joystick doesn't immediately make the SRV fly off at 100 MPH as soon as the wheels hit the ground), take off and laser / rocket / rail / whatever the skimmers.

You can land a few KM away and drive up to the base and trigger the skimmers and run away again back to the ship.

Or just shoot them with the SRV like you're supposed to but the SRV has weak guns so that wasn't as fun.

They will respawn at the base when you have killed a wave.

Never bothered with the POIs as they were a PITA to find.

Just note, FD stopped most skimmers from spawning until you get out in an SRV and spawn them. At that point you can go back to your ship and they'll continue to spawn from that point.

Last skimmer mission I attempted about 3 weeks ago. Loaded a Cobra III with dumb-fires, tried to strafe the skimmers (since the base was really ticked after the first couple of shots). Nope...seems there's some sort of missile defense system on the base. Even spamming as many missiles as I could didn't work.

Wound up cancelling the mission and limping back with around 20% hull.

Learn the base layout and hit the relevant powerplant at point blank. Anti Missile Defences can't stop that, and it'll shut down most (not all) base defences, leaving you free to assault the skimmers. Do it before the trespass zone kicks in.

Note: The powerplant will repair eventually. Be prepared to hit it again.

I usually drive around in the SRV anywhere on the target planet killing skimmers as I come across them, collecting mats & cargo as I go. This has become more time consuming recently so I've started actually attacking the target base instead. Less fruitful on mats but you get to do the scan-all-the-poles puzzle and overall it's quicker. If I'm in a small ship I'll take out the big defence guns too (in the SRV), if I'm in a tanky ship I'll ignore them.

I like driving the SRV, while I'm in the bubble skimmer missions are one of the rare occasions where I get to do it as part of my regular BGS activities.

I drive round about 30km away from the base laying smack on them as they defend crates of worthless minerals and broken nav beacons. Works for me.

So much for 'blaze your own trail,'

I love it when people complain about things that are realistic. Someone found a vulnerability in a base's defense. The base corrected the vulnerability by holding the skimmers underground until needed. "LOL SO MUCH FOR BLAZE YOUR OWN TRAIL AMIRITE??"

Imagine you're playing a game that is a perfect simulation of modern day Earth. You read a "guide" on how to "grind banks" - how to rob banks and make money. Step 1 of the guide says, "there'll be a guard standing outside the bank - shoot the guard."

So now you're exploiting the vulnerability. You're shooting the guard. Then one day, you load up Earth go to a bank to grind some credits, but the guard's not there. What happened? Someone explains that, since the latest patch, the guard doesn't stand around outside where you can easily shoot him.

Is that broken? Is that unfair? No dude, that's realistic.

Is it really that hard?

Nobody said it was hard. I was curious how many people attack the base vs. POIs around the base. And how many people stay in their ship vs. use the SRV.

So what was the result?

p.s. the hard comment wasn't aimed at you, more aimed in general at those who can't seem to do anything in this game without using some kind of exploit, and then complain loudly when the exploit gets taken away because now 'it's too hard'. <shrug> it's their loss.

With the darkness, it's much more fun to do it in a srv, the only light is from lasers from above sizzling the ground around you.

I use 2 accounts. Park a Cutter above base. Medium ship with SRV to knock on the door.

Activate base with SRV and level it with the Cutter DumbDumbs :) Job done. Credits flowing.

Not as easy as VolleyBoom but just as lucrative.

I don't. Like at least 50% of the mission types on the board, they're only good for the novelty value if you've never done them before.

What do you do to earn credits? I started taking skimmer missions again recently because they seemed to be the best paying option.

Luxury VIP passengers, 1st class VIP passengers, and certain missions, in certain systems - but I don’t share that info lest it be nerfed.

A good set of passengers, 3 at a time, nets me an average of 30m in about 35 minutes.
A good set of specific missions turns an average of 200m an hour. There are some very specific requirements to meet, and they tend to dry out before too long, so you’ll wind up moving around a good bit, but that’s sort of what this game is about after all.

My other source of solid income is a bit more risky, and takes a good bit of prep, but involves filling a Type-9 with rare commodities and hauling them to a few remote places. At 744 tons it takes quite while to fill, and it also requires the use of a Python to prime, as a few commodities are only found at outposts. So fill up on those, switch to the 9, fill up the rest and haul. Be ready for near endless interdiction attempts and profit to the point of nausea when done.
