How do you face those long trips in VR?

That moment you land on the star and discover that Caterina wants you to drive her to the fumaroles on that icy moon at 250.857 Ls from you...

I personally just wear it off and put my Oculus on the desk and follow the "do nothing for 10-15 minutes" special feature of Elite: Dangerous on the mirror screen. Of course when it happens the immersion is gone and there's no way for me to bring it back, except logging off and take a break. I try to avoid those long hauls as much as I can, but the tourist haulage missions often bring you down there and I cannot give up the big bucks they offer (you know...).

So what's you're experience with that? how do you feel when it happens?

I have to say that I also abandon the VR for long trips. I'm just on my way to Sag A having been to Colonia and it's been in 2d the whole time. I just find that on the long trips I want something else to do so I tend to watch films on my iPad while going through the jump honk scoop routine.

I take it off and check email, use the "facilities", get snacks...water...I leave my HMD on my desk in such a way that I can see the distance and the crosshairs so my alignment stays on track. Taking it off it a good way to take a break from weight of the device. Anything longer than 10k ls or so means a bit of a break.

My longest drive is from Alpha Centauri to Proxima Centauri...22Ly away! That was about 2.5 hours, with the max speed of 1780c on the trip. I took the HMD off and went to lunch. I couldn't imagine sitting there for that time just watching the stars go by.

Autopilot would be nice. I refuse to abandon a mission. I just can't sleep well knowing I did that. Instead, I divert all power to engines, close my eyes and lay my head back; opening my eyes once a minute to make sure I'm on course; making corrections for heading and closing my eyes again.

No issue here - I love the supercruise aspect of ED. Either in-system or long jump-honk-scoop sessions. I've only been out about 8,500ly from the bubble though.

I just have music playing in the background with easy hot-keys set.

Just to be more clear. In my OP I refer to Super Cruise long tavels to secondary stars and far away celestials, not to exploration and multiple-hops around the galaxy. ;)

Long supercruise flights: Well I just chill out and keep an eye on the radar, put on some tunes, occassionally I get up and walk about my cockpit, chat to my wing man to see what he is up to and discuss whats next on our agenda. Mostly, I just think about how much cooler my paint work (or lack there of) will look when I reach my destination...

I don't really have an issue with supercruise personally, you can always break up long trips by dropping into a USS or two or have it broken for you if you are interdicted. I find the speed in which we travel from planet to planet to be remarkable as it is, even if at times it makes it hard to comprehend the scale of everything around you. There are also a couple of tools around to allow you to open virtual windows in VR and view web pages, watch TV etc. I never got much mileage out of them as the overhead of running such apps outside of supercruise was too great, although I have had fun watching sci-fi TV / films from some nice ingame locations at times.

You should definitelly try HelloV, it brings youtube, browser, etc. right in to your cockpit. It's like having a telly that you can place where ever you want, how big you want :) Sofware is on beta stage, but works and is wonderful when it comes to immersion, nothing is better than watch angry videogame nerd inside your ship!

I gave it a try yesterday. Looks very interesting, but it overlaps terribly with my keybindings (I'm a left handed joystick+keyboard user here), expecially with the SHIFT key. I can't get why Hello V has the UI recenter bound on the SHIFT key (besides Y button on the joypad). Maybe it is a bug. I will wait for the guys to improve the software usability and eventually give it another shot ;)

While I'm an old hand at Elite, I'm still new to VR, so I spend some of that time Practicing the Galaxy Map. I've got it all HOTAS bound, but I'm still getting "good" with it. A few minutes of targeting specific systems is helping. I also like to poke around with Fire Groups and stuff while I have the chance. Finally, that is also a good time to jump into the Debug Cam and fly around my ship!

I went to Colonia in VR, as a result I only did two hour stints, but I found it quite relaxing tbh. I did fall asleep in the HMD on one occasion though.

For those long trips, I just get up out of my chair, and pace the bridge of my ship, poking my nose various nooks and crannies, and generally enjoy how much detail is there. I might also go classified camera mode, and enjoy the view from outside.

I'm on my way to Colonia with a round-about.
Every few-thousand LY I'm going to that unreal world for coffee and
cigars and a cookie. The development is further in that world, I even have legs!

PS, I hope V will be there for the Vive soon, heads up!

Turn off orbit lines.

Turn off HUD.

Crank up the tunes.

This. I did the trip to Colonia and back in VR, and I did most of it bobbin' to some combination of my music library, spotify and pandora.

Man a HUD Off Hotkey that was bindable would be super nice.

I made a command in VA; Ctrl + Alt + G
Then I ticked the box "When I press button" and bound that to a button on my Hotas.

Same as above, I made the binding in VA so everytime I say "night mode" it toggles HUD off or on.

I chose that statement from the button on a Saab 95 labeled the same.
If you hit it, all dashboard lights and instrument illumination changed. So only thing visible was the lights outside and a very dim light illuminating the speedometer.

^^^ This.
I love wandering around the bridge. Since I bought the Touch controllers and got an extra sensor, the Rift is much better at handling walking around. Last night I discovered the writing on the floor of the Cutter bridge behind each chair says "Pilot Ejection Ssystem" and "Copilot Ejection System" (or something like that) and indicates the blue rails behind the seats. I sometimes just stand behind my own chair and watch from afar :) (sad I know). There's plenty to do and see. I see how close I can get to the doors at the back of the bridge before I run out of cable on the headset... (Does anyone know if you can use HDMI extension cables with a Rift?)

Yes you can extend the Rift cables. Beyond a certain point, 'active' cables are needed.
The Anaconda/Cutter/FdL bridge definitely requires room-scale though!
