How do you get a system named after your fleet?

Not sure if this is the right spot or not to ask, maybe move to right spot?

I was looking for information on how to get a system named after your fleet. I see a lot of other fleets have dibs on systems in game, what is the process of this?

If you mean getting a player made faction group into the game? You have to submit an application to Frontier. And then wait a long time.
Also helps if you're actually role-playing and creating community events and getting involved with stuff.

If you mean 'I want to name a system hairynuts Space Zoomzoom Pew Pew l33t nippletwisters Inc.,' just because...

Well you can't.

That's what I am talking about "player made faction group". I have roughly 300 members of a fleet in STO I want to bring over to this game. The plan would be to head out to the void till I discover the first Y Type star and many planets and call it home. I was hoping I would be able to work over time to build it up. Starting with an outpost then larger etc.

Does this sound reasonable?

Can't do it like that. You won't own or control anything. It's literally just another minor faction added into the game with a stupid name that players pick.

Well that's a bummer, there really should be something like that. Anyway, how about expanding a major faction into a remote system? I would still like a minor faction. Where do you apply for that?

You want to be looking here: https://forums.frontier.co.uk/showthread.php?t=241826

Currently no group under about 4000 players could create their own station, in the past only community goals (with ~4000+ players) have led to new stations since the Devs have to manually add them and as soon as 1 group has it everyone will want one. As was crudely but accurately put above :) you can get yourself a minor faction if you are big enough and active enough, details in the link above. Frontiers decision is final, in the early days they'd add everyone even groups with hardly any players, it quickly got silly and unmanageable so at current there's a threshold somewhere.

You cannot control, be in charge of, direct or even suggest expansion and colonization out into uninhabited space. Each and every time a new deep-space colony is founded, it has had to have been manually edited into existence by the devs. There's a whole empty galaxy out there, but you can't do anything about it other than explore it.

As an example, let's take a look at the community effort needed the last time a deep-space colony was founded: Obsidian Orbital, Maia.

As a community-driven effort, there was first this thread in May 2015 to discuss the broad concept of colonizing the Pleiades and drum up support. Then someone else ran a "build a station inside a nebula" poll in August 2015, here, with the Pleiades the clear winner. Then there was a CG to build and launch the new starport; here's the Galnet announcement in Oct 2015, and the starport finally went live with version 1.5 of the game in November 2015.

So you see, at best, it takes six months to colonize a new star system - and that's with loud and long support from a broad base of players here on the forum. FD was at no time obliged to actually pay attention to the persistent requests to actually build Obsidian Orbital.
