Newcomer / Intro How do you know.....finding a planet

When you are exploring how do you know you have come across a planet that you can rename (first discoverable) currently when jumping into systems i am scanning all locations that show up as unexplored, is thgis basically correct or am i way off the nark. i only have an advanced discovery scanner fitted
thanks

You can't actually re-name a planet but you can get the first discovered by tag. What you need to do is fire up your D scanner and then go into the system map. This will tell who (if anyone) has discovered the planets.

thats what i meant :) so its really that simple.

Yup, it's that simple. Works best if you buy an advanced scanner which scans the whole system. To find undiscovered planets you will probably need to go a fair distance away from the central area. But sometimes you get lucky and find a partially scanned system which you can finish off.

Keep in mind that the 'first discovered by' tag is awarded to the first person to sell the exploration data, not the first person to scan it. So even if you scan an unmarked body, someone else might scan it and sell the data before you do.

Question : doesn't one need the "detailed surface scanner" too to get the "first discovred" tag on a planet ?

Thanks! That was going to be my question, too. I give every system a honk with the ADC, but only bother scanning the surface if it looks interesting from the system map picture.

You DO have to scan every body to get your name on that body. I.e., if you scan the star but don't scan each planet you will only be the discoverer of the star even though you ADS scanned the system and can see all the planets.
On a system with a great number of planets and moons, it can take a great deal of time going to each and scanning them. As for getting back and selling your cartography data, you don't have to feel too pressured about taking your time.
I search out Earth Like Worlds and only this last time out (3 months), of the 79 ELW's I found, I only lost 2 to other explorers because they found and turned in their data before me. They were only 1500LY from earth.
Even with hundreds of CMDRs exploring, the odds of somebody finding the system you scanned before you get back is well....astronomical....grin

all hunky dory i found some planets and got the first discovered by tag when i handed the data in. I was out in the sticks for only a few days

Ah, right. So you do need to scan each item individually, it's just that you don't have to have a detailed surface scanner when you do (though it's obviously worth carrying one for the extra payout). Gotcha!

Hi THere

I'm out on the sticks for the last two weeks, went to the Tryfid Nebula and now at Pyramoe DS-H D11-23 heading to the core. Its worth scanning the planets and keeping an eye out for ship wreck's and I dont see the point in scanning asteroids because you don't get anything from it.

PS I would advise in getting Auto Field Maintenance Unit and a good Fuel Scoop.
