How do you make sense of trading?

I know there's been countless threads on trading, but I am confused by a simple question.

Why does a refinery system import refined metals and export food cartridges? I just don't know how to make sense of any of the data.

Try http://www.elitetradingtool.co.uk/ to get an idea of what goes where then use it to see what the data means.

Thanks I'll try that but it doesn't seem entirely in the spirt of the game to me. I was trying to find my own trades based on what a system does like you could with the original game but it doesn't seem to be that simple any more. I really can't get why a refinery would possibly be importing gold and exporting food cartridges.

Industrial refinery.

That doesn't explain anything at all. It's just two words.

This is the first time I've felt really disappointed with the game. I've been trying to look for trades that make sense for hours and found nothing, then I use the third party market tool and find a good trade route that makes absolutely no sense whatsoever. Why can I make a huge profit moving machinery about 200 light seconds from one station to another but make a loss taking gold from a metal rich system full of extraction sites to a high tech system making machines but with no resources of it's own?

i would advise trading in rares until you can aford a 200 tonner, then find a route were you make 1k per ton too and from. There are some systems that export slaves and import metals, and vice versa about 20ly away from each other, finding them can be tricky though. Although the system im using atm does not import slaves but still has a medium demand for them, while supplying the metal needed for the trip back to buy slaves.

It's a very large galaxy with a huge design scope, therefore give the game 5 to 6 months time for the Devs to work things out system by system. I've taken a break from it until the end of May 2015 just so I won't get all worked up about these types of things. IMHO, it's best to wait for a more polished and loaded content rather than constant frustration. It's an amazing game, however it just needs more time and attention to have things sorted out.
