Newcomer / Intro How do you Map a Planet ?

I'm getting this when I investigate an unexplored planet: "You have not yet mapped this planet".
And I've certainly no intention to ..... ;)
But how is it done and are the maps available ? Thanks.

You fly fairly close to a planet and throttle to 30km/s in supercruise - zero throttle effectively. You then fire a probe at it using the DSS (detailed surface scanner). You'll need it assigned to a fire group.

Edit. Gah, hit save too quickly.

In the FSS, on the lower right-hand side, you'll see a number which corresponds to the amount of probes you'll need to fully map the surface. Each probe will cover a section of the planet depending on how it lands and you target it. If you cover 100% with less than the count, you'll get a mapping bonus.

In order to map a planet you will need to have a surface scanner (DSS) fitted. Fly within range of the planet (Dss indicator in HUD will turn blue), and launch probes towards the surface of the planet. You will need to bind a firing button/key for this purpose.Once you have completed surface coverage, any points of interest (POI) will become visible. You will then be able to head for these and scan the surface feature, if such exists, for a small bonus.Mapping planets will increase the amount of credits you receive on turning in the data. Some planets will pay out more than others (e.g.Water worlds).

Thanks for that. (y)

It's definitely not on my current agenda, but one of those non-aggressive activities which appeal to me. Thank you.

Note that you cannot buy a Detailed Surface Scanner (DSS) in the newcomer's systems. So you cannot play space-darts to map a planet until you have left the noob-zone and bought a DSS module.

Seems a little odd to have the "you have not mapped..." in the sysmap of the newcomers' zone when you physically can't actually perform that function ever. Perhaps it's just to maintain consistency, game-wide.

I've had this same issue. All things in the thread matter but nothing counts until you claim it in universal cartographics. At least this worked for me.
