Ships How do you name your ships?

I name my ships based on their purpose, or at least how I envision them (sometimes just for role play purposes). I try to use names that have historical/cultural/pop cultural significance, too:
  • Fleet Carrier - Outside the Asylum (see HHGTTG 'trilogy')
  • Vagabond (Exploration) - DBX
  • Doc Holliday (Bounty Hunting) - Vulture
  • Insecticide ('goid Interceptors) - Chieftan
  • Maynard's Pearl (Pirate Hunting) - FDL
  • Ubiquitous (Odyssey Missions) - Imperial Courier
  • Pesticide ('goid Scouts) - Krait Mk II
  • Sanguis Pro Sanguine (PvP) - FDL
  • Loco Ocho (Crazy Eight Race) - Cobra
  • Nostromo (Surface Mining) - T9
  • Harvester (Haz RES Combat) - T10
  • Salvation's Edge (Search & Rescue) - Python
  • Dig Dug (Surface Mining) - T7
  • Loomis (Secure Transport) - Keelback
  • Cutty Sark (Trade) - Imperial Cutter
  • Mjölnir (Bounty/Pirate Hunting) - Corvette
  • Farsight (Fun/Runaround) - Eagle
  • Black Swan (Salvage) - AspX
  • Oasis of the Seas (Passenger) - Beluga

I don't name them, until something significant happens in that ship, either in terms of the roleplay in my head or gameplay wise.

My ships have to earn their names, basically, and the names are part of that ship's history within my fleet.
i named my ships "my ship" because otherwise I'd have to buy the letters from ED and put them on...."my ship", and since their already known as "my ship"...my head hurts.

I stick a code at the start of the name to indicate landing pad size & current role - U-S/CBT "YetAnotherName" would be a small combat ship. I sometimes repurpose ships, so just tweak the role code to match. If I refit it to be an Ody mission runner then the fine ship "YetAnotherName" opens a new page of its history as the U-S/MIS "YetAnotherName".

I thought about the ID for this but that was only a few characters long and didn't appear on the station panels, so I used it for something else.

When I started, not knowing where it was going, I decided to go with the film "Alien" as a theme, so I stuck with it, and all my ships (aside from a couple of exceptions) are named after characters or quotes from it.
For my alt account I went for a more spontaneous approach, so none of my ships have a serious name. 😊
(Unless you consider serious the only Anaconda I will ever own, which is a Keelback)

A loy of mine are named after famous Discworldians - Angua von Uberwald, Verity Pushpram, that sort of thing. Some are from an ancient moving picture called "Aliens", like Spunkmeyer. However, my current fave is Santanico Pandemonium.
