How do you play ED?

I run out of things to do so I widen my objective lens a bit and try things I wouldn't otherwise try if the things I wanted to do actually worked as intended.

Recently I have looked into doing the Guardian unlocks, but the silly arcade style way of doing it turned me off so much that, even though I went to that planet in that system, I quickly aborted the attempt at the unlock and instead gathered mats on the little sister planet and the one just up the street from it.

Then I headed back to the bubble to look at messing with some damaged stations, but wanted to find a mat trader first however my gal map did not show anything in my area, nothing. I had to use a 3rd party tool to find one. By the time I found one, I realized my pinned blueprints disappeared and I didn't know which mats I really needed any longer.

I looked at the mission board to see request to haul 5K tons of this or that for silly amounts of money (sensible if you have a wing of 3 or 4 ships which is obviously the intent). Other missions were to go kill a billion of this or that faction for about 32 dollars and some change. Of course my "kill a billion enemies" ship is 25 million dollars away.

There's of course planetary scan missions that require the use of an SRV. I like the SRV ok but anything that involves using it is too involved for a single low paying mission. I better get some G5 mats from it and not just 2 - 5. There were also begging "missions" where I could, of my own volition, give away millions for absolutely no reason since I am fully ranked. I know they give the money back in really lopsided hauling missions like "haul this toothpick to that guy in the corner for 2 million" and they offer about 4 or 5 of them stacked, at which point you realize why they are in such bad shape to begin with - they beg for donations then overpay through the nose until they lost it all. "MEDICAL EMERGENCY!!!"... sure bud. If you didn't pay 10 million to get 2 tons of bauxite to point b, you'd be all set.

I go check the passenger screen. Oh look, someone wants to go see the twins. Then there's a desire to visit the beacon at Jaques. Nothing like taking a slow boat to Australia to see a radio tower, then take the slow boat back... and pay 50 million for the trip. Actually I could probably be in Australia IRL by the time I could make it to Colonia and back in the game. There's a sightseers, they only want to go 1200ly and see 4 different systems. Surely those will stack. for 4m credits, you cannot beat it.

So I look at the shipyard... 6 ships, standard offering, nothing in outfitting to give anyone a reason to buy one of the ships. I could fly to more fruitful systems that have all the goodies, but then there I would be, with all my toys in the high population system scanning signal sources and looking for materials for unpinned blueprints for ships I have no reason to own.

I guess I like to do a lot of stuff.

One of the main reasons I enjoy ED so much is (IMO at least) there is no right or wrong way to play it. You as the Commander, are solely responsible for your actions, how you play, what you do in game. This got me thinking, just how do others play the game? I know it won't be the same as my way and suspect everyone plays the game a little differently from everyone else. So do you/have you:
  1. Found that one activity you enjoy and focus on that and that alone?
  2. Role play your Commander, you have defined a set of rules and follow them, even it is detrimental to your safety?
  3. Set yourself a series of goals, and totally focus your efforts on achieving those goals (i.e. decide to reach a certain rank and all you do is related to getting that rank)?
  4. You never really have a plan or a goal, you just do whatever grabs your interest at that given time?
  5. You read about some Commander doing 'something' in the game and decide then and there that you will try that as well, even if you have never thought of doing that task before?
  6. Want to try, or at least, attempt to try everything in the game, no matter how inane, silly or grindy that thing is?

  1. No.
  2. Somewhat, but they are more like guidelines.
  3. Not really, there are goals but not focussed.
  4. Pretty much.
  5. Occasionally.
  6. Not everything.

Interesting topic, From the day I started playing ED to where I am now and how I play currently are completely different! When I first started playing I had no idea about anything, didn't know how anything worked and died alot. For instance when I started playing I immediately was greeted by what I saw as a massive spectical of beauty of deep space the immense void of potential wonder and I wanted to set out to see it all Right Then and Right There making maybe 11jumps and being introduced to what I called the "ohhh for ** sake are you **** joking me" moment when I realized there was something called Fuel. At which point I was at a dwarf star a very cold star or a very hot gas giant depending on how you choose to look at it. Back then Fuel Rats did not exist if they did I was not aware of them. Much like other facets of the game which introduce me to the "Learning Curve" of the game which was just as steep and immense as the void its self. From that point on I set out to learn anything and everything I could about the game and Im not going to lie it was alot and took a good long while to learn what I needed not just to survive in that pittyful SideWinder but also how to advance and progress.

At that point I started setting goals, Get this X,Y,Z,A,B,C and move on to the next and so it went.
Get money.
How To Get Money
Researched "How To Make Money" (yeah literally googled)
Found EDDB
Did Trade runs in a SideWinder till Cobra
Did more trade runs in a Cobra till Viper
This process repeated until I got to the financial equivalent of an ASPx
Realized I couldn't afford the ASPx or get it until I got Alioth Rep
Ground Alioth Rep (for ever!)
Finally Got AspX
Found out I didnt need Alioth rep and could have purchased for 15% at Li Yong
Did Trade runs in AspX
Did smuggling in AspX making more money
Got Cocky and Died in AspX
Barely made rebuy for AspX
Played for months without rebuy In AspX in High Security Systems Only doing trade runs
made enough for a type 9 did some trade runs
Went back to AspX vowed I would never fly in something so * slow ever again!
Tried mining back in 2015-2016 hated it (boring af)
went back to trade missions
Tried Combat (ugh Time to kill back then sucked)
went back to trade missions

This went on for awhile you get the point eventually the game got updates, we go Engineers. That was my next big goal and I proceeded to unlock Every Single Last Engineer. Built ships, sold ships, got better ships, better weapons. Combat started getting easier. At that point you felt like many others that you had to engineer your ships this was a point in the game that saw alot and I mean Alot of people leaving as we all were going up against NPCs that were better engineered then the players I would love to show old Forum posts but since Fdev has updated their Forums old links are broken which thats really awesome. The game has come along way there's No denying that but covering that up is just weird.

Now its 2019 and I have at one point or another flown or used almost all of the ships minus the Imperial Clipper and Cutter which is my current goal.

I have unlocked and researched every engineer and every mod, Minus some guardian tech; Current goal. I have at this point finally made it out to Colonia, unlocked those engineers, Made another Billion credits, got bored went to Sag A*, I came I saw I said "ehhh thats a little unnerving" hit the tourest beacon and left. I dont know for the life of me what I was expecting I've seen hundreds of Black Holes this was just bigger, You used to be able to fly into them and out the other side and were treated to a Myriad Kaleidoscope of color and light as you looked back out at a Galaxy of stars being shifted around you which is maybe the most visually astounding and awe striking moment I've ever had in this game but that was a brief time and has since been replaced with a occlusion zone that has you drop out of FSD, suffer heat damage then eventually blow up and die. This was the reason I started playing Elite Dangerous to be free to go where I wanted, to explore what I wanted, when I wanted, how I wanted. To see and experience the awe, wonder, splendor and mystery of a galaxy full of stars, planets and possible other sentient races that may be out there that I know full well that mankind will not be around long enough to see atleast I know I wont. Thats the true rub with ED you go in expecting one thing and what you get instead is mostly just empty space. Sure you can fight space aliens (Thargoids) on some certain planets but it doesn't posses anything new you get knocked over or tossed around a few times which is more annoying and agravating then anything until you realize that the AI is stupid. The second most visually appealing spectical is unlocking the guardian tech weapons and modules or checking out a Thargoid crashed ship sight where your treated with light, sound and a single moment of what I fail to call anything other then beauty. Truely which ever dev did those is a true artist and I think that thats what we all want and crave the most how you play the game is a moot point when we are all seeking that one amazingly beautiful spectacle which the game doesn't have alot of and hopfully gets some more content with more.
The coolest thing I ever saw in this game was the 1st time I saw a capital ship enter a combat zone. I wasn't a forum member, didn't know anything about them and had been in combat zones almost exclusively back then. Suddenly there's this lightning display and this thing comes out of the black cloud of death. I thought about running. Actually I did run about 5km away in reverse and just sat there watching this thing. Too bad nothing much was ever done with them.

Though this game has 2 modes where you can play alone most of the time, the real fun in this game is multiplayer. Everything is different with another real player.

1. No
2. Somewhat. I keep my nose clean, don't kill feds. I considered pirating but it seems the developers keep pushing the user base away from it. Otherwise no.
3. No goals except to see what's around the next corner.
4. That's me
5. That too. I went to the Jameson crash site and some other cool places when I read about it. I thought the cross galaxy trek to bail out a stranded explorer by mining mats for jump range was top notch, couldn't do it myself but if anything would move me to go that far, it would be a goal like that. The thread about exploring with a T-10 got me interested in the T-10 again so we'll see about that one.
6. Not really. I want to do things that don't make the game feel stupid or simple. Just flying a big ship in and out of the station is still part of the best enjoyment of the game. Seeing new stations and landing on planets perhaps no one ever landed on, that's pretty cool. Doing the arcade thing with the big blue (for me) triangle in the middle of my canopy, that could go away.

Pleas clarify: Does playing the game makes you want to drink (heavyly)? Or do you want to play the game only when you are slightly drunk (plastered)? Or do you drink and play come what may? o_O

Since I stopped drinking beer and gaming (alot), the wish to grind (alot) has waned (somewhat). Strange, ain't it??? ;)

I don't get the grind urge whilst drinking and playing so that might be a beer thing, I use wine or port I used to use cider but it is to fizzy causing extra cleaning of the kit.

I don't. Just waiting for late 2020 and wondering what part of the game our sooo "creative" FDevs are going to spoil, as they did with Exploration.

If you think something you enjoy might go away best get on with using it while you can ;) I'm currently A-B trading to repair stations.

I play so much now because I know one day I may not be able to play at all, and I'll wish I'd played more when I could.

Really I just started playing and have been in solo from the start- have been trying to build up and learn a little before going in. I have no idea the story line of the game other than to explore it and see if you can find/make CR's/Explore. Seeing a lot about ancient races and seen on youtube some fights with a thing that looks like a flower sort of thing- starts with a 'G' IDK. I said in another post I would start when I hit 50mil credit but I just tried out my Crater Buggy - then lost the ship- found out to find it again so as of today I am in the mid 60+mils so will be coming in soon. Will see would like to read about the story of what it is we are to be doing(Story line) Where can that be found?

*To be honest I have a T7 and am loving the cr's it produces running missions on Boom deliveries :)

I started a new account 2 months ago after transfering all the assets of my nearly triple elite CMDR that was on PS4. Starting all over again but on PC. Bought a new graphic card, new HOTAS, head tracking and installed a few mods. Really enjoying this new experience of ED even if I have to unlock (again) all the engineers & get back my elite ranks (I'm not rushing it).

Each week I'm focusing on one specific goal and next week I do another thing. It's the best way for me to enjoy everything and not go into a burn-out (got 750h in the game and still enjoying everytime I log in). What I love the most is exploring deep space looking for amazing sights and take pictures & videos. I also really love "hiking" huge mountains and canyons with my SRV (spent hours in SRV to get to the summit of a mountain...just love the challenge and sight lol).

I also love doing some combat so when I come back from exploration I always spent a few days fighting in scenarios & RES to gather some materials for engineering and having fun pew-pewing.

Still haven't tried BGS a single time. Would love to start but I don't have a single clue how it works so I'll have to read a little bit. Would be a nice new activy that gives me "weekly goals". I also never did a single CG but looking forward for the revamped systems and "long-term events" that FDev talked about...could be a great way to bring the community together like the Gnosis did (yeah, it was not perfect but loved it and spent hours defending it with other CMDRs...I have great memories of it :) ).

As others have eluded to, in a sandbox format, I need goals. I need to have that thing I am currently working towards, and will find enjoyment in doing.

Right now that is DW2.

When DW2 in done I have a lot of my own exploration ideas and targets for the trip back to the bubble.

When I am back in the bubble I have some more lore based things to work on (Raxxla ideas).

Then will be all the things I have not done for the duration of all this, which will seem fresh again (trading, fighting, BGS).

Engineering's been around like it currently is for a fair while, though, hasn't it? Do you think it's that the game has changed to the extent that it's suddenly become un-immersive, or is it possible that some other factor might be impacting on your ability to immerse yourself in it? Speaking entirely personally, and with absolutely no assumptions, insinuations or comparisons intended, I live with quite severe depression and when it ramps up, which it does periodically, I find I lose a lot of my ability to do the imagination thing, and while I still play, I do so much more 'mechanically', if you see what I mean.

Or I fully appreciate you may simply have felt this lack of immersion for a long time now. I'm just curious as to whether it's a recent thing. Again, I'm not trying to make any assumption about you, except to wonder whether there may be something external to the game that's affecting your enjoyment of the gameplay. And I only wonder that because, as I say, engineering doesn't seem to have changed much very recently.

For what it's worth I don't do a lot of engineering, in general, so there may be stuff I've missed. Though, occasionally, I'll go scour a planet for elements or drift through a few wreckage clouds looking for bits and bobs... And, given that that latter activity is basically the first thing we see the Serenity crew doing in Firefly, I've got to be honest it doesn't seem inconsistent with a character who's probably not dissimilar to yours. Not that I'm assuming we're both very obviously Firefly fans, or anything... 😁

That's a lot deeper than I've thought about it! I'm sorry to hear about the depression. I've been lucky enough to avoid that. Although I've had some issues with trauma it never developed as far as PTSD. Some nightmares, occasional panic attacks, but far fewer of both the longer I've been out of the service. I wish you the same- I hope the condition will ease at some point.

This might be worth watching? Even if the message doesn't strike a chord, the hat is epic! 😀

Back on topic, I always thought engineering was a bit too gamey (is that a real word?) for my tastes. I dabbled, thought 'meh, not for me' and went on to something more interesting. I heard it'd been revamped and the guys who like engineering seemed happy with the changes, so I figured I was the problem, not the game. Fair enough, I share the game, I don't own it, if peeps like the new feature, good for them.

My main issue is power creep. Over time, the game has ramped up the combat abilities of NPC ships to provide an acceptable level of challenge for players. I don't have a problem with that theory; I loved the little monsters MoM created! But the lack of an 'I win' option led to huge protests from the community. AI was ramped back down, leaving players irritated by the lack of NPC challenge again. To provide it NPCs got tougher defences and weapons.
It's very difficult to chip away at NPC shields enough to actually hurt them, while they get various 'cheats' like spawning on your tail after an interdiction, full health back on a second interdiction and the like. There's always been a gulf in capability between useful player builds and combat orientated ones, now there's a similar gulf between 'vanilla' unengineered player ships and NPCs with excessive boosts to their defences. Combine the two and it's entirely possible to get destroyed by a stupid as mud NPC whose advantages can't be countered by any amount of player skill.

Most fans of engineering don't come across the problem- their ship has similar defences to the new NPC builds and they have engineered weapons to boot. Combat against anything other than top tier NPC opposition is a foregone conclusion.

The solution to NPC power creep is simple- build an engineered ship.

But that makes engineering compulsory, unless you want to run away from every encounter.

I miss being able to out fly NPCs- to zoom and boom in a go fast, or win a turning fight in an agile ship. Now every ship turns on a sixpence, the NPCs have battleship shielding, even the biggest ships in the game can overhaul a small fighter- the skill element is gone. Winning a fight is done by choosing appropriate upgrades, rather than practicing the maneuvers that work best for your ship.

I guess it's the fantasy I want to follow. I want to be a gunslinger, only getting into fights when I absolutely have to. But the game's evolved, now I have to be a swat member. Instead of strapping on a pair of six shooters and trusting to skill, I'm forced to wear armour, chose appropriate weapons and leave absolutely nothing to chance. The character of combat in the game has changed.

And I hate the engineering process. Scan, scan, scan, forage, forage, forage, endless go cart runs around some unmanned station a parsec from the Asp end of no-where... it's not fun, it's not immersive, it's just a colossal waste of time. Even Joss Whedon would struggle to get a script out of it!

Third party tools help a lot, so do comments and tips from players who actually like engineering. I'm getting there- I've unlocked most of the engineers now and I can use pinned blueprints to bring my main ships up to an acceptable standard.

It's just collecting obscene amounts of junk in dull, boring and repetitive game loops that's doing my head in! 😩

What you say regarding engineering certainly does make sense, and I have a better idea of why you find it... disappointing? Less fun than it might have been. And I hope you don't think I was trying to challenge your viewpoint in my earlier post: this genuinely wasn't supposed to be a fangirly "there's nothing wrong with the game" kind of thing. There's lots wrong with the game, but I was drawn to wondering whether it had been a recent thing that you'd found. But thanks for talking through it; as I say, I do have a clearer idea of the reason for your dissatisfaction and I have to say I agree with a lot of what you say.

So, now. The video.

Thank you.

I'd never seen that guy before. The message certainly does strike a chord. While I don't want to go into too much detail on a cheerful forum about a video game, I'll settle for saying that having had a couple of moments of my own I can relate to the story he told rather too well.

I'm fine now; day-by-day fine, and if nothing else I've learned a lot about myself. My perspective's changed quite a bit. I should say in my case it isn't PTSD, and I've never served in the military (silly little thing, this, but it's why I never do the 'o7' thing people do on ED forums and groups - I generally just wave 'o/' instead). What it is I don't really know, but I think I've pretty much accepted now that I'll either figure it out one day or I won't. Still, as I say I don't want to go too far into something that'd be considered inappropriate for the forum. But I wanted to explain why I appreciated your words and the link. Thank you again.

And you're right: it is a magnificent hat. 🤠

I like to have plenty of variety but was finding having one account too restrictive. I now have four - Flossy, Flossy2, Flossy3 and one named after our hamster, P0PPY. My main (Alpha backer) account is Flossy who is currently on DW2 and recently became Elite at Exploration. Flossy2 is currently in Colonia, occasionally working for our faction, HOTCOL, doing any Colonia-based CGs or sometimes responding to Fuel Rat rescues out that way. Flossy3 is my main Fuel Rat account, mainly based in the bubble but sometimes venturing further on long range rescues. P0PPY is also based in the bubble, often taking part in any Hutton Truckers events - currently involved with station repairs. :)

I just swan around in the Empire with my Prince status, taking out bounties in my metallic blue Mamba. Been doing this since the Mamba was released. It aint getting boring yet, so I shall continue.

Paltry prince.. I wave my armpit stench in your general direction as I am a king. Yes... you read that right, perhaps the only king in the game.
