How do you record videos in VR?

Title. Sometimes to get screenshots I have to use the desktop window, and that is really potato quality - don't even get me started on videos.

So how do you record Elite Dangerous video while in VR?

For the record, I have a Vive and an NVidia card.

Set the desktop window resolution to the resolution you want to record in, and then record that. I use OBS Studio for streaming. For recording I've used the GeForce Experience stuff.

Not sure if there's a better way.

I can recommend using "GeForce Experience" as well. The Shadowplay function is easy to configure (you do that from the GFE app) and you can start and stop recording with a single keypress. The videos are stored in mp4 format in a directory you specify.

Only make sure, that you have plenty of free HD space.

also using OBS as Geforce Experience as of version 3 requires an account (?!)

you can configure hotkeys to record the last x seconds etc.

With Nvidia Cards and Nvenc codec no performance loss on the GPU and only 4% CPU usage

Like the others have posted just set the desktop output to the resolution you want and record it with OBS.

That is what I do, HOWEVER I just discovered in my latest recordings my mouse cursor is in the middle of that window and recording - ARGH!

Now I have to re-record :-(

Thanks, I will give it a shot.

Will a non-SSD work with recording in real time? Time to buy another one just to store gameplay...

Depends on your bit rate and settings.
But yes.

For regular youtube etc capture a good'ol spindle disk is capable a plenty, and using encoded capturing like NVENC or even x264 this will really not be an issue.
Even 4k@60hz videos on youtube are encoded to around 50Mb\s .

In short unless you are capturing high resolution high framerate non compressed video, a regular disk is plenty.

Yes, i record on second HDD in Full HD 60 fps. No problem, even when recording for an hour or longer.
I have an 4690K i5 processor (factory settings) and 32 Gigs of 2.4gHz RAM. Recordings are flawless with no stutter or sound shifts.
1 hour of recording in this setting requires 16 gigs of free drive space.

Here is a quality sample, taken with the Rift and GeForce Shadowplay:
