Newcomer / Intro How do you scan a navigation beacon?

My mission (should I choose to accept it) requires me to go and 'scan the navigation beacon' to find the item I am supposed to be looking for. What sort of scanner do I need to have aboard in order to do that, please?

just the built-in target scanner

basically, go to the Nav Beacon, drop into normal space, target the ACTUAL nav beacon (not the nav marker) - target panel will animate, scan complete measage will follow

Brilliant, thank you. I am a complete novice at this game. I have recently upgraded to a Cobra MkIII and I still don't know which devices are fitted as standard.

Ok, tried flying up to the nav beacon marker - the yellow three-quarter circle - but no sign of the beacon itself. I hve tried toggling through available targets: just lots of spacecraft, but no nav beacon. Any ideas, please?

[Edit: It's ok, I have found it. The white marker on the scaner]

[edit 2;] so what happens now is I have flown to the suggested target planet and I keep getting a 'Mission related signal source' in blue, which promptly disappears from my info panel. How do I re-find that signal source?
