How do you "target 2nd Star from the left... Engage!" basically ;)

Sorry, no idea what you are asking here. Are you talking about from within the galaxy map? in which case you just click on a system for info.
Or from space? on which case you have to discover the system objects with a scanner

I think he means that if he sees an interesting thing in the sky, he has no way of targetting that thing or seeing where it is on the galaxy map.

i recently thought about such a system
it would be nice if you could activate some kind of "Filter" in your cockpit, that makes the sky basically clickable, or shows information on mouse-over etc.
include the ability to set a waypoint and maybe get more information about the object

I would love to be able to do that, the amount of times I see a star and think where's that, go to the galaxy map and try to cross-reference by using nebulas (etc.), and/or clicking on random stars just to get an idea of a direction and hope I strike it lucky, is somewhat annoying at times. But I get over it. ;)

Perhaps FD could implement a separate navigation module which you activate from a weapon hardpoint, with different class modules for different ranges (50 or 100LY max perhaps). Basically it would tell you the name and distance to the object, and be able to plot a route. For other info you'd go to the galaxy map.

I know that FD are thinking of making exploration dull (IMO) by implementing scanner probes, but I think I would prefer to use a module similar to this for simple navigation and exploration rather than wade through the galaxy map.

I'd like something that makes that easier.

Right now, the only practical ways to do it are to guess at the correct direction in the Galaxy Map or to cycle through the possible targets for a hyperjump in the Navigation panel until you pick one that's approximately in the right direction.

This is probably not the answer you are looking for but I try to explain how you could narrow down the direction.

You see a star in the distance and you want to check it out so you point your ship at it and switch into the galaxy map

In the map you select a starsystem near you and go back to look at your star - note the target indicator that should show you the other star you just selected

If the selected star is behind you it means you need to select another star in the "opposite direction" in the galaxy map

you will have to do this procedure more than once but in the end you should have selected a star system in the same direction as the star you were looking for

now you have a better idea of where to look in galaxy map at least the direction and you can make short jumps to get closer

select next system in this direction and jump towards it - only problem now might be to find your star again

well like I said its probably not what you were looking for but I cannot think of an easier way
