How do you use the new mining stuff?

For best effect. Do NOT target anything with the drone. With no target selected, it will do an area collect. Meaning it will pickup all things in range.
For prospector you need to be facing an asteroid to shoot the droen at it.
Also importantly, you need ammo. Specifically, you need to goto a station. dock. And on services, hit the Munitions tab. And buy limpets. Limpets are universal drones. And they take up cargo space. So buy how much you think you'll need. They're cheap, so you can jettison some and leave them behind if you need to make room.

Don't waste your time on the prospectors. When you find a rock you like, knock off a hunk and if it looks good detarget the hunk and then open your scoop and launch a drone. Knock off more hunks. Bask in the glory of the drone filling your bays!
I didnt buy any limpets I guess thats what I did wrong. Thanks. I'll try that.
That was my thought when I bought it, but I thought I would give it a try out, but I guess its probably a waste of space.

Prospector mostly is. Since you can mine off a chunk and check its content by hitting T to select. Then aim a bit away and hit T again to deselect. I personally don't use prospector. I mine and take everything. Even the junk ore like indite, bert, galeite. and when i get near filled and if plan to stay longer. Jettison the cheap stuff and continue on mining, but get pickier. I have absolutely no idea why they just didn't make prospector a utility slot scanner, not a drone.
Depending on what you're mining in, you can run double drones to grab fragments much faster, so being more efficient on your time.

No you can jettison while collector drone is out. Just close your cargo hatch. Sure it'll bring back like 1 ton per drone. But if you're dumping 15 tons of indite, then its fine. Just shut cargo hatch, and fly out of range of jettisonned stuff. Drone will just hold onto whatever it has in its claws since it can't turn it in to your ship with hatch closed. If you're good, time closing hatch on last fragment. Then jettisson junk that you don't need when nearly full of cargo. Fly off out of range to another asteroid. open hatch, and go back to mining.

Its an Asp. I got about a 72t cargo hold. A class 3 prospector, a class 3 collector, A class 3 8 bin refinery. Its a pretty nice little mining ship.
This makes it so much faster, its quite a nice little relaxing mini game. I could make a fortune.
It could do with an auto refiner, especially with how fast they work.

Prospectors actually tell you the 3 way split of an asteroid.
Blasting chunks off will only tell you 2 out of the 3 types of the ore.
Limpets also keep track of how much ore there is left in the asteroid.
They also remove the fuss of having those stray rocks floating around that the collector drones will pick up.
I'm assuming having a protectorate wing armed with additional prospector limpets will aid a dedicated minining vessel.
