I see here: https://forums.frontier.co.uk/showthread.php?t=6371 that I can whisper a friend directly, but all I see are option to unfriend and block?

There seems to be some problems with comms atm, if you have said friend added to your list before you start the game, you will get notification in game when he comes online.
You can then press (default) '2' to select coms, press right arrow and select your friend from the list. As to whether it works yet or not i do not know
