How does Autoland work?

As it says. I haven't used autoland/start since 2015, I do all my landing manually. I now had the idea to record some ships landing and taking off. The only way to really do that in camera mode is to use the autodocking comp.

Take-offs work if I pay attention but I can't autoland. I fly to the station, look at the slot, and throttle to zero. Then nothing happens. No response from autodock whether from 1km or 7km. Why doesn't it work?

Just checking: did you also request docking clearance from the station? You didn't mention doing that (though you need to do it for manual docking too, so I assume you must have.)

If you are requesting clearance within 7.5km and throttling to exactly zero, auto-dock should kick in. The only other thing I can imagine might be wrong is you may have automated docking turned off still in your ship's setting. (There are separate options for landing and takeoff if you have the advanced docking computer.)

Yep you have to ask for docking/landing permission then set throttle to zero.

If you’re away from civilisation then if you drop your landing gear and set throttle to zero the auto land will kick in. I never use it for rough planetary landings as it can be temperamental (and occasionally try to kill you).

Yes, I did request docking clearance. I also tried jumping away from the station, then returning and asking for clearance.
I did check in the ship settings and both auto landing and starting are turned on.

Despite all of that I just kept sitting in front of the station.

What toggle? Or do you mean you had the Docking Computer disabled on the right hand panel?

If there's a toggle I would love to know!
