How does chaff work?

I've tried to use it in different contexts but I haven't noticed its effect. When is the best time to use it?

I think you fire off the flares when you receive the "incoming missile" message, preferably when the missile is close to you so waiting a few moments after you receive the message might be a good idea (or a really bad idea ;) )

But isn't that what the electronic countermeasure is for? I though chaff was for general targeting, like to disrupt a scan or a gimballed or turreted weapon lock.

Hmmm, maybe your right, i might have mixed a few concepts together.
If chaffs disrupts targeting and scans, then maybe dropped heatsinks is for incoming missiles.

ECM apparently doesn't work properly atm - there even is an in-game news item on a recall program.

In flight sims it would be best used to disrupt radar-based weapons. For heatseeking missiles you'd use flares (heat sinks in ED).

It appears FD are not quite sure what to do with them atm.

Is it acceptable to bump this?

I really like the idea of using chaff launcher but it seems to have no effect at all, so I went ahead and sold it for point defense.

Please, does anyone know if it is even working? Should I ticket something like this?

Last time i had point defense i died to the first missile coming from behind. :D
.
Not sure how well these things are implemented yet in the beta.

It disrupts any weapons that lock on to you, this includes gimballed weapons. Also disrupts any scans on you as well I believe, so good for smugglers entering a station. Considering a large portion of players are using gimballed weapons, a chaff launcher can be quite a useful tool.

Edit: http://elite-dangerous.wikia.com/wiki/Chaff_Launcher

I recall them being described for disrupting scans. However, I've been successfully scanned (and fined) after launching chaff at the first hint of a scan.

I've since tried mounting a 2nd chaff launcher with the thinking that it might not work if the scan is coming from the other side. That is, if the chaff launcher is on the bottom but the scanning ship is coming at me from the top side. Haven't had a chance to test it, since.

I also haven't tested them against incoming gimballed fire, but I'm not sure how I could really test that. These sort of things need friends in other ships for a controlled environment.

Thanks for the responses, and also the tip on point defence hhahahaha.

I'm quite sure chaff doesn't work against gimballed weapons either. I've faithfully launched them and have used them against turret weapons. It's a no go for now.

Chaff doesn't break missile lock after they are fired in ED. Missiles are apparently IR.
Chaff is also bugged at the moment and even works against fixed lasers. Don't expect this to last long.
