How does Coop with friends work?

How do we exactly play together properly? bounty's from what i know are not shared, warping to where the other person is seems like a nightmare etc, what are the benefits to playing with a friends? seems like it's just very stressful and time consuming with no shared benefits.

"It doesn't" is probably a little strong. A better answer is probably "awkwardly". The bounties bit is no problem, just requires good communication and trust.
Staying together is a little trickier. Assuming the mp is functioning, it requires good communications and some concentration. Thus isn't actually a bad thing as it means you feel like you are actually flying a complex space ship rather than being along for the ride.

They are introducing 'wings' in january or february

that's the whole coop/grouping framework

right now you can play with friends but takes a bit of work

hmm a bit depressing lol.

Find them (let's say arrange a meetup near some station). Mostly it should work these days. Then follow them in and out of supercruise using your friend's FSD wakes (signals they leave behind when they jump into supercruise/out of supercruise). No need for scanner.

The only answer currently is "it doesn't work" because there are no co-op mechanics in the game. It doesn't work "awkwardly" because it doesn't work at all. You cannot share bounties. You can "not steal" them by stopping shooting a target. You can swap but you can't share bounties. There is no game mechanic for sharing at this time.

Some of the features we want are supposedly coming with the 'wings' features next month, but I wouldn't get your hopes up that it'll match what we expect, want or what's in the DDF. My guess it it'll be bounty/mission reward sharing among Friends lists members in the same instance and colored icons for friends on the map in the same instance. That seems the path to get enough of the planned feature to call it "done". (See Mining and Player Trading for more examples like that.)

I had a lot of bother playing Elite with my friend today. We were in my private group and still couldn't locate each other despite being at the same place. Turns out we were on different servers. Things is, ED doesn't let you manually select which server you are on!

how do i follow them without a scanner?

Low power wakes are your best bet.

One of you interdict or pick up missions and the other use the low-power wakes to join in real space....

Then split the reward manually with legal cargo at a starport.

Yeah my friend and I did the low power wake thing today. It was frustrating to drop out of SC on it because the throttle was not auto-adjusting itself as I closed in. I kept overshooting it and I had to put my throttle at one little smidge above the bottom just to get to a point where I could have a shot of dropping out at the right time. It was frustrating to say the least. That said, when I was able to drop out correctly, it worked as advertised - dropped me into his instance.

I can't confrim that. I was playing a couple of hours with a friend today and our ships DID throttle down correctly on FSD wakes. The only thing that seemed consistently broken was joining your mate, after an interdiction took place (active or passive). You won't be able to see the opponent in that case..

All in all playing together as it is has just too little benefits. If there was a mechanic that allowed destroyed mission targets to count for everyone's mission, or if you could somehow share bounties, that would add a lot to the experience.

You don't need a scanner

Completely wrong. I've spent lots of time playing in a group with my husband, him dropping into my USS instances, and me into his

I see the white triangle things in space but how do i use them?

The little "group" I'm in is a few of us that "met" playing WarThunder.

What we do is, we camp a nav beacon at an Anarchy system, and K-scan all NPCs and kill (or attempt to) any of them that have bounties. 2 of us are in "fighters" (a viper and a cobra) and one is in a hauler. The other fighter pilot and I split the bounties, we widdle the NPC down to low % and who's ever turn it is takes the last few shots to get the bounty (we always use TeamSpeak for voice comms, so coordination is easy). And the player with the hauler scoops up all the cargo that the NPCs drops. Its a pretty good little racket and all 3 of us make decent credits, and more importantly have fun. The most fun is encountering a hostile player controlled ship. He shoots at one of us or kill steals too many times, and he doesn't realize all 3 of us are working together in teamspeak, and all of a sudden he has 2 additional player controlled ships directly on his tail spraying at him :)
We all came over from WarThunder so air to air team combat is what we like, and that seems to have translated well to space to space combat :)

We play Open play and never once have we not been in the same "instance" (i.e. server) when arrive at the nav point. I think match making uses your friends list as one of the priorites for placing you in the same instance.

I tend to agree that "team" play is so-far lacking in ED. You cant "share" missions, though there is a youtube video of a small group of players taking down one of the 150K bounty targets together you get from the bulletin board missions. Im not sure how they all got in the same instance to do this, though I assume they are using the Private Group play option and used scanners to locate where the original player dropped out of supercrusie to attack the bounty.

Anyway, this is the first Ive heard of "wing" and hope it brings some cool stuff.

works fine for me
just trade off kills

but having even one other person in combat with you on coms gives you an OVERWHELMING advantage

When you say it works for you what Icon do YOU see on your screen that enables a link -up to be made, cos1 all I see is group name and who in the group is on line. THAT's It, plz tell what you get.
