How does firsrlt footfall work and... system view?

How does first footfall work? Do i just need to land, disembark, walk a quick circle, and leave? Do i need to then land at a station and register my footfall somewhere? Does it work in planets with stations/settlements/outposts etc? Also where does it show because i dont see it listed anywhere?

While I'm at it...i feel dumb but cannot figure out how to see the system view of a system I'm not actually in. Anyone figure it out?
EDIT: it looks like i can view the system map of only certain systems. Maybe just ones I've visited? The rest i dont even have the option.

I've landed on systems with no stations or major settlements to see if I could get first foot fall to show up after a went and sold cartographic data. I haven't had success yet. I could have sworn it worked in alpha but I'm not 100% sure now. Still trying...

It's working. I went out to Hypatia's Lighthouse in the Formorian Frontier prior to launch and was able to get first footfall on multiple moons out there (I left most untouched for other travellers). Never did see a beacon to scan, though. You don't need to turn in cartographics data to get credited for First Footfall, you'll always be the first to have walked there.

I'm about a week's travel from the bubble (and that's if I do nothing but scoop, honk, and jump every evening after I get off work), so I can't say definitively what the situation is there, but I suspect most locations within the bubble (even uninhabited ones) will be registered as having been visited at some point in the millennium or so that humanity has been expanding there. You can check in the system map if something has already been marked as tread upon before landing there.

I know that you can't get first scan in some systems but I'm having trouble getting first foot fall in systems where you definitely can get first scan.
Now I'm beginning to wonder if first foot fall can't happen within a certain distance of the bubble right now.

Important thing is: First footfalls don't work in inhabited systems. We need to go outside the bubble.

It was today, about three hours ago in Truecha ZK-P e5-25. Sorry, I'd have to fire up the game again and backtrack something like thirty systems to get to where I first did it. You get out of your ship and walk around for a few seconds and it'll tell you you've made first footfall, then the environmental data (gravity, temperature etc.) gets displayed on your HUD. Load up the system map and go to planetary information for the body in question and it says who made first footfall there.
