Newcomer / Intro How does owning multiple ships work?

I bought a hauler, but kept my sidewinder. It didn't ask me which ship to fly, it just put me in the new hauler. It never asked me about storage. I flew off in the hauler, hauling things for a while. Now I want to switch back to the sidewinder.

At a shipyard, my sidewinder only shows up under Ship Locations, its not under Stored Ships. What is the difference? If I fly back to the system where the sidewinder is, I can switch ships right? Why pay for storage if I can just leave it at a system?

You go back to the system where you nighttime Transit van hauler and go to the shipyard. The Sidey will be in the "stored ships" tab. You can either sell your stored ship or switch.

Indeed, why pay for storage? No one else does either.
