Newcomer / Intro How does standings work?

So i am in empire space, i take a mission to kill pirates from a certain station which is aligned to empire. When i finish the mission i get a boost with the owners of that station but lowered standings with a different faction which is also part of empire (not independent)

So if your doing missions your trading off between two corporations? Does it count towards the empire faction in general or i'm just grinding standings for a specific corp in empire?

Basically, Group A asked you to kill some pirates from Group B. You do this. Group A is now better off in some way (safer spaceways for trading or something), and Group B is less off (maybe the pirates' smuggling was boosting the economy or similar).
That kind of concept is how I understand it at the moment.

EDIT: As long as you aren't getting a Red arrow next to the Empire in your Rep screen, it should just be a local thing. Too much of a bad local thing, though, might lead to an actual effect with the Empire in general.
