How does text & voice communication work?

I just got hailed by another friendly trucker and I spent several minutes failing to discover how to communicate with him, Commander VWCamper I apologise...

So I have tried to search the forum and indeed Googling but to no avail.

Please advise :)

You can bind keys in the options for Quick chat (Text only reply, which you need to target the player to work) or full chat mode, which allows you to select any target in range to text or voice communicate. :)

Thanks very much I hadnt realised. I already have keys bound with the X52 pro preconfigured settings.

Default keys are:

  • 2 - opens the chat window. (Like a box on the end of the comms window top left)
  • Enter - opens the char bar

As Septian said you need to target someone for your transmission to arrive. (Bit dumb if you ask me but it is the 1st iteration so I guess I should cut FD some slack ;))

By this you mean clicking on their name in the contacts panel? I am assuming this must be the case as the guy started talking to me whilst we were both supercruising.

The problem I've noticed is someone can mssage you but if you've not targetted them or able to target them you just can't reply, even via quick comms (sorry cmdr Backer #38264)

So does communication only work within a certain range, even with friends? It doesn't work between friends in different solar systems, for instance?
