How does the 'Discovered by' feature work in ED ?

Hey folks, I was wondering how the discovered by feature works in ED?

At present, I am out exploring the galaxy and there is a chance I might come across some unique systems that are yet to be explored but I was wondering if the feature works ONLY if you are the first to surface scan a planet and sell the information or if it's capturing who is the first to surface scan alone.

If it's the latter, is there some kind of buffer/delay in verifying the information before the tag shows up?

I only ask because I've come across some star systems that don't have a discovered tag after I have used the detailed surface scanner.

Thoughts would be appreciated,

Thanks

You have to sell the data to cartographics before anyone else does. It's Cartographics that keeps track of who saw what first!

Ahh I see, I wish there was a way the galaxy filter could display systems you've visited. It's going to be harder to keep track of what you've scanned if you're out in the void.

Thanks for confirming dude :)

If you haven't visited a system AND haven't purchased exploration data for it, the "System view" icon will be red. The first time you do visit it, however, you'll scan the main star automatically and the icon will thereafter be accessible, so it's a single-use trick.

As an aside, when you are in the system view and find a planet which somebody already discovered it will be quite apparent that that is the case. Though I expect that won't be news to the OP.

You need both. The regular one to detect the bodies, the planetary one to scan them.

Then, hand it in first, get your name on the "discovered by" plate. Doesn't always work properly though (handed some systems in, got the money, didn't get mentioned and no one else is mentioned), I guess they will fix it.

Just got a couple of those bugs regarding systems not showing my tag (or anyone else's). Most systems worked but a couple in populated space didn't

My assumption is that unexplored systems in populated space already count as having been discovered, so nobody is going to get the tag for them.

So . . . . do you need the Detailed Surface Scanner, or one of the "normal" scanners ??

To be credited with the discovery you need to use a detailed surface scan in addition to a discovery scanner. Belts still don't count for anything however, I would love to know why Frontier thinks information on natural resources should be worth nothing.

Nope, populated systems (i.e. ones with a station) can be discovered, check out Jen Lung for example.

I had a few systems that were red (unknown to me), but I had the option to purchase the Cartographic data.
When I checked this data before the jump all the bodies (including the star) had "First Discovered By...(Cmdr Name), but also had unexplored on them?
Then, when I jumped into the system every planetary body was missing until I Adv Discovery scanned it, I also had to Detail scan everything to get all the bodies to appear in the "System View".
I could the sell this data when back at a station for profit. EI got paid for every Detail Scan >?
If the system is known, has a discoverer named and can be purchased on the galaxy screen how is this possible?

Does performing the detailed surface scan give the player any details about what they just did?
Just added details about the scanned object

Still a few mysteries with how this all works then

Lore answer: Because UC likes to verify their data, and so a number of secondary scans are allowed and paid for by them to verify the previous data and finetune their estimates on orbits and other stellar mechanics.

OOC answeR: Because if only one person could ever get paid for a system, exploration would be a lot less fun than it is.

Are we 100% on this? I thought a basic scan would still give the "discovered" tag but it would remain "unexplored" unless it has been given a detailed scan.

Same thing here. I simply put in a ticket. Am sure they will get to it in due time. Best thing i would suggest to anyone as you come across these things is to create a ticket so they can prioritize which issues are affecting their customers the most, etc.

Yes we are 100% sure on this. Another couple of things we are 100% sure on are that anything you are first to discover will be advised to you upon selling with a nice little "Congratulations" dialog listing your achievements, there is no need to guess if you were first or not, and when out and scanning you can also tell if you have a chance to be first by checking the system map. If no discoverer is listed then there is still a chance that you will be first to hand in the data and get the claim.

I got 200 LY outside populated space on my way to Orion, detail scanning as I went. EVERYTHING was already tagged "discovered by". Good luck.

Just assume any star of possible value within a 1000Ly in every direction off the edges of civilized space has already been cherry picked. Go coreward or at least towards the brighter areas of the spirals. Younger stars and in greater density which increase your chances by a crazy amount to be "the first one". Tomorrow im making my first trip towards the core thats about 4-6k Ly from my area, wherever i end up is where i end up.

And stay away from any popularized constellations and nebulas that may simply attract people because of what the name is.... unless you really have to see the randomly generated stars in person.

Yeah got that. I've got a bunch of discoveries. I guess I was more of the thinking that the system information icon on the Galaxy map will remain red until being fully detail scanned. Hence one could basic scan and get the tag but another could still make money by coming in and giving it a more detailed analysis. Crazy that you get to Ranger and still not fully grasp the system :)
cheers for clarifying
