How does the subsurface mini game work?

I know you have to release the trigger when the little bar hits the blue bars, but what about the stuff on top? how does it work?

The stuff on top merely dictates the speed at which the bottom part scrolls by.

High bars indicate high density (slow drill speed, easy), low bars indicate low density and will drastically accelerate the speed at which your blue segments scroll by (difficult).

Hitting a tiny blue segment at top scroll speed (low drill density) can be a bit tricky. to hit..

why are the blue bars of different sizes?

Those represent thinner and thicker deposit areas, which adds to the difficulty.

The drill can basically work through a thin deposit layer much faster than through a thick deposit layer, so your timing for the detonation needs to be more precise.
The density surrounding the drill (the top stuff) then adds a second difficulty to the whole thing.

cool. i was under the impression that the minigame would dictate how much rocks were ejected. good to know i was wrong

I am VERY glad the OP asked this question; I'd come on to ask exactly this.
I'd assumed the one-liners contained the most lucrative loot; it makes sense for the minigame.
Interestingly though, I find I'm getting the best payouts from the two-liners; 5 and higher rocks. ATM I'm only targeting two-line signals and the input has gone up remarkably. Your graph shows why - thanks!

The data on the one-liners is quite low, but probably yield is slightly higher on average than 2-bars. However, unless you can successfully extract the 1-bars reliably it is probably not worth going for them.

I've been having success with the 1-liners; I have pretty fast reflexes. If you like, I could target them, count the rocks and send you the data.

Oh, I am going for the 1-bars whenever I see them and am sufficiently successful. I just stopped collecting data. I will do some more general data collection when I am back in game on Wednesday.

Of course, more data is better - I might make a post regarding joint effort when I return.

OK - if you (I think this is what you are suggesting) decide to source out the data collection, I'll have good data for you: 1-line signal rock counts in 20-block chunks, which should provide good statistical data. As you've seen in another thread I'm currently exploiting a single rock, which would corrupt the data so I'll take only a single instance from each 'roid and log the results. If you don't need it, cool; it will be fun. If you do, it will be available. :)
Cheers!

send a link to the post once you make it

It hasn't. I'm getting one chunk from the 1st thick blue bar, but 3 or more from the more difficult ones later in the graphic.
