General / Off-Topic How Does The XBox One X Affect Us?

The release of the XBox One X is imminent. I have to admit, I find it tempting. It's more powerful than the PS4 Pro, and yet it's smaller and even uses less electricity than the PS4 Pro. It costs $100 more, but you get a lot for that extra $100, especially since it comes with UHD BlueRay player.

However, I'm pretty tightly bound to the Playstation ecosystem, so I doubt I'll be crossing over to the "dark side". This leaves me wondering about Sony's response. Do you think we'll get a price drop on the PS4 Pro? Perhaps they'll release a PS4 Pro Slim to compete with the smaller form-factor of the XB1X. And of course, the big question, when are we getting the PS5?

I liked it when we (PS4 owners) were ahead, even if only by a sliver. I'm not used to this "second place" stuff.

I think Sony will respond by dropping the price of the Pro and Slim to be honest. I still don't think we will see PS5 anytime soon or a Pro slim.

The reason is that the Pro and Slim are only just coming up to a year old. If Sony release new hardware in the next 12 months it will be the start of a 24 month upgrade cycle. That will be bad news for consoles, bad news for consumers and might just push me back to the PC.

Saying that I hear you on Sony for the first time in a while being in possession of the weaker hardware. If you noticed from Paris Games Week. Sony are pushing a LOT of exclusive IP games. I think this is where the short term effort will go.

Still like you I am slightly tempted by the X1X but also ingrained into the Sony franchise but, having said that depending how it goes I would never totally rule out an X1X.

I think the XBOX One X will be good for the PS4 Pro.

Why? Now everyone will want to make "enhanced" console games!

I mean, not everyone released good updates for the PS4 Pro, but now they have a reason to go back and update their games for both the Pro and X, very cool.

And yes, I'm still trying to find a way to afford a X1X, PS4P, PSVR and a 4K TV... not there yet :-(

A Pro Slim wouldn't be unheard of. I got the original PS3 Slim that had the auto-loading disc tray, and not terribly long after they released yet another version of the PS3 Slim that had much cheaper manual disc tray and shiny plastic that scratched easily. However, it used less electricity and was quieter. I also believe Sony was able to shave $50 off the price tag doing this.

The key was that all the PS3s were functionally identical, so a "new" PS3 did not obsolete the older ones. That's why I think they can do this with the Pro, as it wouldn't be any better than yours, just a smaller and perhaps cheaper "packaging" going forward.

If Sony comes out with a cheaper, smaller, less power-hungry Pro, I'd probably buy it.

I'm actually worried about this myself. One of the reasons console games tend to look better than their PC counterparts on equivalent hardware is that developers take the time to optimize for a console they know will be around for at least a few years to come.

Originally the Pro was primarily released to give players 4K graphics on their new TVs, not as an excuse for companies to release shoddy-looking games on PS4 vanilla with an unsaid, "If you want the quality graphics, buy the Pro." Horizons Zero Dawn and Uncharted are examples of how the two PS4s were meant be differentiated, whereas what I'm seeing from Frontier since 2.4 dropped feels very much the opposite.

This is why I actually hope Frontier can figure out how to give Pro users 4K and HDR without hurting the current geometry and texture quality, because in order to do that, they will need to amp up the geometry and texture quality on the PS4 vanilla in 1080p mode. I only have a 1080p monitor, and I should not have to buy a Pro to make ED look decent at 1080p 30fps. Unfortunately, that's exactly the state of the game as of today.....

Sony did respond a few months ago.

they raised the price of PS plus.

also I'm kinda mad at Sony. they wouldn't refund me for that lump of crap. One man's lie..

also they have been stupid over fallout 4 mods.

From what I've read, I'll go out on a limb and say the PS5 will be here for xmas next year. No need to worry, in additon to haveing better everything, it will have the ability to play all ps3 and 4 games as well as any new one designed for it.However to get the most out of the graphics, one will have to have one of those new tv's. It will work on old ones but it won't be utilizing the graphics as well as it could.

Duck, your the only one I know who bought one of those tv's with an semi arc screen. How do you like it compared to a flat screen?

#FakeNews (no idea where you got it from). I play on a 1080p PC monitor, albeit a nice Samsung one. It's flat as can be. I don't think I'd like a curved monitor, unless it was the curve of a VR rig on my face :D

Google search "PS5", provides a few links, and U Tube has a few videos to watch in regards also. Having read and viewed all of them. And in so doing came up with my going out on a limb as I stated.

Personally, I am willing to wait for it, though I will be in the market for a larger screen new 4 k television prior to hearing the actual release date. So, I'll be ready when it arrives. Which I'm thinking will be late next year, and Xmas is about as late as one can get.

I'd reckon it's my bad; But I believe it was just prior to or just after the launch, that you made a reference to getting a new tv and it was a new 4k with the slight arc in the screen. Perhaps you were just thinking out loud and I misread it. I had no knowledge of a tv with slight curved screen until I had read your post and got my interest. I've done some searching, and can't seem to find much about it and how it compares to a flat screen in reality by real people, not marketers or retailers.

Are any of them "legit" sources or just random people making stuff up on the internet?

I'm expecting Sony to go the other direction, by making a PS4 Pro Slim and lowering the price to the current PS4 Slim, which means the non-Pro Slim will be even cheaper still. Sony has a bunch of great titles lined up for 2018, and they all look amazing on today's hardware, so if they can beat Microsoft in a price war, they'll continue to win the console wars.

X box one x won't effect anything and the majority of gamers could care less about top notch graphics and superior hardware. I have a regular ps4 and that's good enough for me until ps5 not to mention that Xbox controller always sucked. They always say you want great graphics and physics go outside.

Well. That told us.

I think we ED players are a bit different (we want the best graphics), but I agree with you on the grander scale. The Nintendo Switch is knocking it out of the park, and that platform is inferior to vanilla PS4 and XBox. That's why I think Sony will continue to win the console wars by lowering the price of the PS4 Pro (and making it smaller so to compete with XBox One X form factor).

Sony's PS4 is #1 based on total sales between the two companies. Not understanding the terminolgy, a layman or non gamer has no idea what there saying in reviews. Which I'd concure are from experienced gammers. The public at large tend to buy what's cheaper. Even though my some of my grandkids have ebox's and some have ps4's; When they pooled their money to buy me a console they bought me a ps4. At the time is was cheaper and came with NMS in a package deal. I know that had the xbox been on sale cheaper, I'd be playing on a xbox.

Not knowing the terminology that defines the various componets which is simular to trying to read a language I don't know. I'd have opted for the Sony also, based on price alone. Long time gammer's have experience and thus compare differences. but the overall market is aimed at those that do not have a device and thus no real experience. Thus if one can save a 100 bucks, not knowing one's device is slightly better or more dependable than an other. Low price is going to win most of the time.
